Body inflation in new Cloverfield movie?

It is nearly impossible to tell from the trailer that's out due it's extremely fast editing style, but I noticed that there is some sort of inflation going on thanks to a screenshot taken by a member of another forum that I frequent. Check out the pictures here.

You think? I'm not convinced...looks like distorted shadows of guys in "clean suits." In motion, does it imply more?

LutherVKane
LutherVKane's picture

Yes, it's two guys in clean suits trying to wrangle a woman in . . . distress. You can view the trailer here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/

In motion it looks like there's some form of expansion going on.

Hmmm, looks like the sort of movie that will be all style and no substance. Hype. There was another teaser a while back. Based on the trailer, this one could be released on the worst, scratchy DVD media available, and the audience will attribute the static and break-up to "style."

I knew that this would be mentioned. I was hoping it wouldn't, though. The disgusting sounds combined with the visuals and knowing that it's a monstrous 'transformation', I'm not exactly excited on seeing it.

Also, anyone remember another certain horror movie that included a girl inflating? Remember how freaking gross that was?

Omg you had to mention that disgusting movie. :(

I didn't mention the name yet, but it appears you were heavily scarred by it. Good, then at least I'm not the only one suffering.

I think he was joking, seeing as no title was mentioned. I mean, a movie with a girl inflating in it. To quote Indy when asked if he knew Prof. Ravenwood's whereabouts, "Somewhere in Asia."

That really narrows it down.

Mogman

It does appear to be some kind of growth...but as the others state it could either be a mere distortion that wasn't intended to look that way. Or it is indeed inflation, but the horrible, nasty not-at-all nice kind. Either way I want to see the film purely because it looks kinda good and I wanna know what this monster is.

That wouldn't be Slither per chance?
That scarred me for life... and was put off inflation for weeks.

I hate to say it as a lot of people already disagree, but since I saw the teaser for this I thought it looked really good. :P

From what I heard the monster is Cthulu

Wow, that movie looks amazing. I rolled my eyes a bit at the head of the statue falling...I just found it a bit presumptious...is that the word Im looking for? But Im sure in the context of the movie it'll be alright.

I hate horror movies today, and I think this could be a movie to change that (like 28 days later was)

One thing that bugged me in the trailer was that the Statue of Liberty's innards weren't Orange. She's copper, you know.

Also: Cloverfield is The My little pony movie, not Cthulhu. I swear, I heard it on the internets.

Ataru

Ironic, Slither, a horror movie that was intended to be gross and disgusting, with an inflated female in it, and you EXPECT it to be all happiness and kisses?
Sheesh.
And as for inflation in the media, a good, oh, zero percent of the time, it's specifically hand picked to cater to your every whim.
Plus, when someone in the community DID an inflation scene specifically for the community, a handful of the community lashed out at him for doing it because he was 'cashing in on the fetish'.
What about the artists out there that do commissions catering to the fetish? You don't think they're doing the same thing? Making a quick buck so you can get your kinks? Ever cross anyones mind?
Honestly, whenever there's a scene in a movie or a tv show that has inflation, chances are people are gonna either whine about it, ask for more, or wonder if said artist has done other inflation works. They don't.
I'm getting off track here. I saw the pictures for this one, didn't really do anything for me.
Honestly, you wonder why people don't respect us when we insist on having a fetish well established in cartoons and fantasy to happen in real life?

well i must say that when i first saw the teaser for this i was hoping it ws godzilla 2, but never the less it still looks like agood movie. as for inflation to me it looks kinda like a quick weight gain and looks even more like mutantion. it could be a possiblity that it needs humans to breed its bin done before. anyway if it is inflation doesn't look like it will be any good and if its not then it still should be a good film.

darth_clone19

Im actually with you Ataru.

I hope they never show the monster in that movie. If they show the monster it ruins everything!

The viral marketing of these movies always turns out the same way. The mysterious attitude angle was used by The Matrix, if you remember, back when the only advertisements consisted of "What is the Matrix?". When people found out, it made for an interesting concept and a good action movie, then went downhill.

I'm hoping for Cthulhu anyway though.

Hmm...I watched the trailer myself. It has gotten me curious about this monster. Not a bad job on the angle they are selling this movie.

Now concerning with that particular scene as I watched it...I know this may sound silly but I could see her bulging over of her pants? It could be weight gain or transformation or inflation itself. She looked rounder more than anything. Due to the silhouettes and motion they were showing these scenes it's really more of a mystery. Exactly how they intended to portray it. It's got me curious...hmm...guess time will tell.

Never let those who dislike what you enjoy get to you. If they won't bother to understand than it's not worth your time. Hold your head up high and be proud for what you like!

Wow, this topic went sour in a hurry. From "hey, this might be of interest" to "Hollywood can suck it" and "you guys don't support your own creators anyway" in less than 20 posts.

Cloverfield strikes me as Blair Witch meets Godzilla. That's personally a mix I'd like to see (we haven't seen anybody play with the first-person-camcorder horror film concept since Blair Witch anyway). I just didn't expect it would be a rallying cry to everybody who had a bowl full of piss and cornflakes this morning.

Smile, motherfuckers. It's only a movie.

Well, you could cheer up a bit, or at least remove the chip from your shoulder. You made a good point in an extreme way. I responded in kind. Did that somehow offend you, or are you just feeling unloved as a creator and saw the earlier posts as the takers attacking the givers?

Everybody else, I'm sure, will tell us how they know that a movie that hasn't been publicly screened yet will suck. The prejudgement of "I know everything from exhibit A, so my mind's made up" is what gets me rolling my eyes.

Ataru

Honestly, I was just irritated at the ones that were downplaying Slither because it had an inflation scene that didn't have a happy ending in it. It was more or less just a 'Um.....right.' moment, being as it was a horror movie anyway. I kind of tapered off when I remembered that one kid that posted a video clip of his movie that his friends and such were making and it got torn down because people thought he was 'cashing in on a fetish to promote his 'crappy' movie', and it escalated from there.
Besides, I'm just one kid. Don't let my opinion sway anyone else into thinking exactly like me. =/

HEh, well, such happens with topics like this, in which you have a psudo "Uncanny Valley" with this. People get conflicting emotional responces to a subject, and people get confused. Happens all the time in all topics.

AS for the movie, It's deffently some kinda alien growth that will undoubtedly result in the unfortunate girl popping.

As for the OVERALL movie, this is something that I want to see, as it looks unique, and looks intresting. We'll have to wait and see, but I'm hopeing for "Cthulu Attacks NY" as that would be pure distilled awesome.

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith.

Ataru

I know, I know, another post by me.
Anyway, I just saw one of the teasers, one without said expansion scene (So I can neither confirm nor deny it exists), and it looks like a pretty badass movie.
If anything, the expansion will probably be like that one scene in Bordello of Blood where the one vampire chick has the sun hit the back of her neck and she swells up really fast then POW!
.....unless they have a sadistic streak like James Gunn, the guy that directed Slither, and draw it out for a while to emphasize the pain.
Either way, I'm sure there's a definite EEECH! factor in it, something a gorehound like myself will enjoy.

Agreed. It's a horror movie -- one with a comic twist but it's still aiming to be shockingly gory. It ain't gonna be sunshine and rainbows. :)

*returns to topic wearing armour*

Um, sorry if bringing up Slither pissed some people off. No harm was intended and I seemed to have shot myself in the foot by complaining about a gory resulting inflation in nothing other than a horror movie... 0_o

Anyways,
This still looks like an awsome film, personally I'm not going to bother contemplating or discussing the apparent growth/expansion/inflation...whatever it is that happens in the whole half a second of the trailer and just wait and see what happens when the film is released.

Inflate123, I support your Blair Witch Vs Godzilla idea. It's pretty much what I thought when the original teaser was screened over here in the Uk.

*leaves topic in search of lighter clothing*

Ataru

Honestly, I've cruised several Cloverfield forums and while some people have said they're being infected with a parasite that makes them swell up and explode, there's been several confirmations that the woman in said preview was transforming into a giant turtle and the expansion was a turtle shell growing on her back.
Honestly, the creators of the movie are being hush hush about the whole thing, so who knows?
On an unrelated note, there's something circulating around the Cloverfield websites and such about a drink called Slusho! and the motto for the site is 'You can't drink just six!', whatever the heck that means. =/

Blacklist

The site is viral advertisement to the film, and it talks about how Slusho! (in the best fake Engrish I've ever read) can basically make you "swell with power" or something of the sort.

It also has this crappy story of how the stuff in Slusho! made a simple fish "swell" (hey, it's what the website said) into a Whale.

So, it's a slim chance, but don't count out expansion with this one.

Caution: this user is a new guy in training.

dragon_6860
dragon_6860's picture

A girl turns into a giant turtle? That's a bit odd...But from what I've heard he's keeping such a tight lid on this movie's plotline that NO ONE knows what it's about, not even the actors to a degree. Apparently he had them auditions with fake scenes or ones from Alias. I'm filing this movie under cautious optomisim. I've never seen Blair Witch (shock!) as I'm not a huge horror fan, but this looks like a goodun.

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith.

srflour

Could be a bit of a mix of Transformation/Growth/spread-havoc rolled into some storyline.

As such, there might be elements of expansion and feederism mixed in. Might appeal to the Furries too if anyone grows and/or changes into something else (How about "The Island Of Dr Hibbert"?).

"Continue the research..."

thehypester

I did a lot of looking into this via the Slusho viral marketing and other sites... I completely agree about this undersea thing leading to expansion. The Godzilla/Blair Witch analysis seems like the correct one, but with the production company from Lost, who can really know what to expect?

The correlation here seems to be food additive + person = oops. Big oops. Big Japanese oops, I suspect, based on the marketing.

Inflation: Not just for economics anymore!

kuumuzu

Big 'oops' indeed. ^_^

kuumuzu

I've read a full account review from somebody who was at a test screening of the movie... POSSIBLE SPOILER (but not much really).

As not to spoil anything I'll just say; yeah she does expand (something inside of her) and yes she does burst... but I shall say nothing more on the subject.

Just have to wait for the movie.
Not too long for you guys now is it? Us Brits don't get a release until the beginning of February. 0_o;

As a bursting fan and someone who quite enjoyed the Slither scene (despite all the worms), I am excited about this.

Think about it: how many live-action full-body inflation scenes of a female are there? Precious few. How many of those end with bursting? Even fewer.

I hope she bursts on camera and in plain view, just like Brenda.

GumChewer20

Hi.
New here.
More about me later.

I'm wondering if it'll end up like in Aliens or something. People said something is growing inside her, possibly new life, so I'm wondering if her stomach will just swell up and then something will burst out.

I hope it's just the one woman. That'll make it more special.

Ataru

Sorry, but the movie's PG-13. Chances are, if you're expecting something along the lines of Slither in the gore department, you're going to be disappointed.
I know I was when I found out it was PG-13.
Mayhaps there's an unrated DVD at a later date, but even then, they usually add a few dialogue scenes and such. =/

You can go here and see pictures of those expansion clips from the movie.

There's also a discussion about it, although it goes into a lot of people arguing about whether it's Godzilla or Cthulu in the movie...
The woman has blood coming from her nose and eyes, although that might not be related to the expansion.

Hey, comes out Today! Anyone planning to see it? I know I'll have seen it by 9:00pm tomorrow. I'll give details on if it's Guro or not.

Lazypaw

Hey there, kids.

I actually just got back from a midnight showing. Now I know it's gotta' be killing some of you, so I'll let you in on how involved this is.

** SPOILERS AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF **

** SERIOUSLY, HABEEB IT **

Okay, so Marlena receives a nasty bite from one of the smaller spider-like creatures. A good twenty minutes of delicious chaos follows, leading the party to a small military outfit based in a shopping mall.

After a brief discussion with some of the soldiers, she can be heard in the background, "I'm not feeling too good."

The camera turns to a pale Marlena, blood trickling from her eyes and nose.

People shuffle about in terror screaming "Bite! We have a bite!" Two men donning blue hazmat suits grab her and force her into a contamination tent. What follows is all silhouettes.

She can be seen from the back, struggling with the two men who have hold of her wrists. A bizaare noise can be heard, something almost liquid-ish. In a matter of not even two seconds (seems to be faster than the trailer), her belly and breasts bloat to extraordinary proportions (at least four feet wide, *much* larger than the preview) and quickly burst. Blood mats the canvas and the camera quickly cuts away.

So yes. There is expansion. But it's very quick, and very graphic through the use of audio.

Personally, I thought the movie is just what the monster genre needed. Won't go too far into it, but I thought it was bitchin'.

Hope I cleared some things up. <3

Yes, thank you.
I actually just found the plot summary on wikipedia and read it. Your description of that scene was much more in-depth.

It seems that this whole Slusho thing didn't even play a part in the plot.
Shame. I like the speculation here better than the actual plot.
Was all that just a "Red herring"?

Thanks! Really glad I could help.

Well that's the thing, there was no defining 'guy in a labcoat shows up and explains everything', nothing that clean-cut. It's a really intimate experience.

As far as Slusho and everything else that Cloverdorks (myself included, of course) know word from word, I think that even more post-movie Expanded Universe content will explain almost everything. Good times. :O

pacman7918

She was also the only one who "inflated". They did show someone who already I guess inflated but there torso was blown to shreds so to say. I wish there were more bites from the little monsters... :)

GumChewer20

OK, question time.

1.)Do you see her expanding at all before she gets behind the curtain?

2.)She must burst her clothes off, right?

3.)Does she react and scream as it's happening?

4.)What does the camera guy do and say while she's inflating? I can't see him just standing calmly while a woman blows up.

I read on Wikipedia that the actress took the role with no knowledge of her part at all, because she liked Lost, and that she would've never taken the role had she known about her part.
I think that adds a little realism to the film, that she'd actually be upset at the thought of playing a woman who explodes.

Sounds like the answer is no.

Having seen the trailer, and now reading this account that it happens faster than the trailer, it sounds like the whole thing happens too fast for any of this to happen. From normal to inflated to burst in about 2 seconds, so it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of reaction time.

Brenda James (who played Brenda in Slither) took the role without finding out her demise, then read the script on a plane on the way to start filming and cried.
