Story Trivia

Lately I've been looking over my old stories, seeing what has and what hasn't changed in my writing style, and I've been reminded of a few random things. We generally don't get much insight as to what's behind the scenes in the creation of an inflation story. I'm fascinated by such things, so I'll share a few tidbits of trivia.

- My first attempt at an inflation story was back in the early 90s. It was tentatively titled Changes, and I never completed it. It was really, really bad. No really, it was awful. Eventually, after I'd put out a couple of stories online, I felt confident enough to revisit it and it was reborn as Expanding Horizons.

- The Pageant was the first inflation story I released to the public. Roxanne was the main antagonist in Changes, and I recycled the character assuming at the time that that story would remain dead forever.

- Roxanne was named after a character in the game Spellcasting 301: Spring Break. The player's character casts a spell on her to help her win a wet tshirt contest, and she instantly goes from flat to busty. I found it inspirational.

Any other authors have any interesting tales?

I had Douglas Adams in mind when I wrote about the bumbling security guards in "The Getaway" and of course "Elbonia" and its associated silliness is lifted right out of the Dilbert comic strip. I tried to develop these a little bit more in the re-write I uploaded (as well as do a spelling and grammar check  ).

That is, *if* you'll post it

Oh, and I've got another one the way. Mostly finished and badly in need of editing - have been following some of the commentary/feedback and trying to keep it in mind as I write.

OK, OK, I'll post it. Happy now?

I recognized Elbonia from the Dilbert comics. I was amused. I enjoyed The Getaway and I'm looking forward to seeing your new story. I can help with editing if you'd like.

Most of the characters featured in my stories are Based off someone, real or fictional. The main character in "The interview" was inspired by an ex of mine, Noriko from "Round 1" is sort of a take of a character from Dead Or Alive, where two of the characters from third "Nyst" Story were based off old rp friends.

Several of the scenes from both second and third nyst stories were either inspired, suggested, or in one case, even written by another person, one of the above "Rp friends".

I recognised Elbonia too, and I copied some ideas of the getaway, I liked it and wrote the reception. My first story was Compressed Air Claire and that was WAAAY WAAAY before anything else. just after I discovered LVKane's site. And It took until recently before I posted it. Looking back at it, it's surprisingly similar to what I'm writing now.

A lot of the characters in my stories are inspired by real people, and on a few occasions I actually write real people into my stories. Generally I tell people when I'm writing them into stories, but there was one exception. I don't even know if it counts, since I never finished the story, and likley never will.

Back in 2002, around the time some of my geekier friends were celebrating what would have been Douglas Adams' fiftieth birthday had he lived longer, I was going through a terribly painful breakup. So I started work on a story that was both a tale of revenge and a tribute to Douglas Adams. It was one of those stories that was inspired by one particular gag, and the whole thing was to be formed around that gag (see Donna's New Look for an example). I wrote the ending first, and started work on the beginning and middle portions, but got distracted from it and never finished it. Here's how it ended:

“Wh-wh-what's going to happen to me?" Jennifer wailed as she lazily drifted skyward. Her beautifully tanned skin was still being stretched by the gas building up inside her. She was so full and tight, it was taking on a sheen like polished latex. I hadn't expected the spell to last this long, and suspected it would stop soon. Perhaps Jennifer would last that long. But the tension in the quivering globe of her body made it quite clear that one way or another it would be over soon.
"Well, I can see this ending one of two ways," I said flatly as I gazed up at the rising balloon that was my departing ex-girlfriend. "Either the spell will run its course and you'll drift away and slowly deflate, or it will keep on going until you're inflated past your limits. Right now, it's looking a lot like the latter."
"B-b-but what happens if I get inflated past my limit, then"
I blinked at her as if she were stupid. "Well what do you think you do? You pop of course. That's what 'inflated past your limit' means."
"What-?!"Jennifer squeaked. Her eyes seemed to be popping out of her head. I wasn't certain if this was because they were trying to see more clearly, or if they simply wanted to leave at this point. Regardless, for the first time since I'd met her I saw that she was completely, utterly at a loss for words. There was nothing more for us to say to each other.

There was a terribly ghastly silence.

There was a terribly ghastly noise.

There was a terribly ghastly silence.

Incredible, I've never drawn comparisions between you and Douglas Adams before but I can see a bit of it in the writing style. You you realise that having given us the ending you now have to finish the rest :) Some of my writing style is taken from authors I may have recently read. Kim Stanley Robinson's style was influential to me especially in my most recent story 'In Good Health', with it being highly descriptive. That's what I tend to be, description over story. I don't read too many novels though and when I wrote Compressed Air Claire, the style was taken from what was at the time my only reference for inflation writing, which was Captain Neil. I had just discovered Jenny the Balloon Girl on a random google search and at that moment wasn't aware of the wider community, or was only just becoming aware. I suppose when you look at my next story, Industrial Accident, which was written a year ago, amost five years after Compressed Air Claire, you can see a bit of that Captain Neilness has gone away, but a lot I think has remained.

Well, I told the rp people I wrote them in..but not my Ex, believe it or not. :P

Its hard to compare myself to Luther, simply because I'd say his stories were actually well written stories! Mine tend to be very simple and riddleled with "cheesecake". :P

cheesecake? CHEESE? AND CAKE?

The characters in my stories are often named after girls I've known, generally ones that have fucked me around:
Rachael (Industrial Accident)
Charlotte (The Reception)
Though Rachael wasn't that bad to be honest. she just wanted me for a quick kiss and I got carried away with myself, didn't even fancy her really. As I write about them though the characters change and become their own girls, just sharing a name with the real girl. Sometimes though I just pick a name and make up a girl I like, like Naomi (The New Recruit). In the Case of Compressed Air Claire, it's obvious the name was just picked to rhyme with Air, and with Bursting with Gossip, Mary is named for a girl who messed a couple of my mates about. The girl who pumps her up is called Shelley. so we have Mary Shelley, hinting at the dark mood I was going for. So there you see why the girl at the end who hears Mary explode is called Frankie.. hehe it all makes sense.

deleted_20091014

Fukureru-Shogun

Hehe, ok. :P Glad I made the point to clarify, then..
