Well, its mixed. If I had a scanner, I would draw some pics for the community, must since I don't a lot of the drawings for me. Most of them are sketches and practicing with an idea, and only a few are complete pictures.
When you draw...
Hey all you inflation themed artists!
I had a question pop in my head that I've pondered for a while now...
When you draw or create an inflation piece is it for yourself or for the rest of the community?
I've always drawn pictures for 'self satisfaction' if you get what I mean.
But with an increasing interest on DeviantART I tend to forget who I'm drawing for. I love that other people like my drawings but in a way I feel I've lost the exitement I used to get from drawing inflated bodies.
Is it because I'm more open with my fetish now than when I was drawing these pictures in secret when I was younger?
What do you think?
I started out for myself... then for the community. Community has a way of killing your excitement for things, cuz they start telling you how you should be drawing things to please them... so i've gone back to doing it for myself. S'why my DA account rarely is updated lately with Inflation art.
I'd imagine that "OMG! AWSM! DRAW HER BIGGER" and the like would be kind of a buzzkill for you guys...
Ditto. Same experience as CattyN and awittyname.
The sad fact is that fans can sometimes be their own worst enemy and don't even have a clue what they're doing to the artists. Instead of getting more stuff out of them, they eventually burn them out and/or piss them off. It doesn't take a whole lot of especially annoying people to badger an artist to the point where they go over the edge. Some people don't seem to understand that most of the artists aren't making any cash off this whole thing and aren't using online art to make a living. They are simply sharing their perverted stuff with like-minded people because its better than having it moulder on their hard drives or in some folder in a file cabinet.
Artists can only produce a certain amount of material in a set period of time and a lot of people don't seem to be empathetic to that fact either.
I had to go back to drawing mostly for myself (and I have enough of my own material to keep me busy 'til the big croak day) a long time ago as a simple matter of keeping my sanity. There are exceptions to that rule. For example: I love fans who are perceptive enough to know how to play it cool and give me great ideas; who know what pushes MY buttons and will motivate me to go crazy with their concept.
"OMG! AWSM! DRAW HER BIGGER", buzzkill you ask?
Yes. My gut reaction to that type of comment is that a person might as well say, "I hate this, do it over again...MY WAY." I get enough of that crap at work 50 hours a week without having to endure it in my "hobby".
I draw what I want to draw and just post it places to see what people think (has no real bering on what I draw, though). Artistic feedback is severly lacking on most sites (and this one is one of the worst ones).
As far as those "Do this, do that" comments, I just ignore them. Same with requesters, they shot themselves in the foot with me, never got even one good idea from someone who was not an artist themselves. I never even got one good commission, all of them never read my rules for them (like, No fanart or porno). I still get those damn rabid requesters that don't take a hint, so I get downright @#$%ing nasty with them (then put them on the ignore list).
Summing it all up, I do it for me, and me only, screw what everyone else wants me to do.
A better example of a type of comment that pisses off artists that Fukureruba was talking about.

That was a request I did. If you scroll down into the comments, you'll find this little gem:
"Can we see this from another angle, preferably the front"
OK, I'm not an artist, but I think writers and artists are in similar boats here. Literature is a form of art, right?
The longer I do this, the more I feel the need to make a distinction between my audience and my fans. As an inflation artist, you'll wind up with a fairly large audience numbering in the thousands, but only a few real fans.
Your audience is the sum total of people who enjoy your artwork. The vast majority of them are people who are fans of inflation art in general (or some related interest), but not your art specifically. They aren't really interested in your individual brand of art, they just know that you're an artist and you draw people big in certain places, and you can probably can do something that they like, so they'll encourage you to do so with an enthusiasm that often crosses into the realm of the rude.. So they'll ask for a weight gain pic even though you've never gone weight gain and have expressed a strong aversion to it. Or they'll tell you that "her bewbies shud be bigger," even though they're pretty much the size you intended them to be. I often refer to these people as "the peanut gallery" or "the unwashed masses".
The fans are those who don't just like inflation art, but your particular brand of art. They're likely to notice when you're trying something new with your style, or when character's hair changes color, or when she's got inappropriate footwear for the occasion. They offer suggestions in an attempt to help make your art better, not just make it conform more closely to their own fantasies.
Ironically enough, the people who are least likely to try and impose their preferences on you are the only ones whose personal tastes are really worth listening to. Not quite sure how to work through that paradox.
The point is thus: the people who are always harassing you about what you should do without having any understanding of why you did what you did are not your fans. Creating art for them is like throwing your psychic energy into a pit. A deep, nasty, poorly punctuated pit.
Hello guys, first post for me. I never get involved, for the most part, as I'm sure nobody has noticed. :P
Anyway, on the topic? I just draw whatever the hell I feel like, and sometimes I take requests, but I just don't get worked up over anything, really. "MAKE HER BIGGER", whatever, I just say "Sure thing pal, next time." and then I continue to draw whatever the hell I want, hah. It's a functional system I have going. I'm the asshole that only draws to get praise, though. So sue me, but if I wans't into a drawing, it would suck. Plain as that. So I only take requests and trades if I think I'll be able to do a good job. It's why I don't take art classes anymore, I started sucking when told to draw things that I didn't want to draw. So that's why I only pretty much draw what I want and don't take requests. Sorry if I'm just blathering on, just felt it was on topic, eh? Anyway, good to be on here!
Oh, god, before I forget. I'm Freakinweirdo on Deviantart. Hahah, almost forgot that.
Oh, god, before I forget. I'm Freakinweirdo on Deviantart. Hahah, almost forgot that.
OH SNAP!
My experiences as an off-again, on again inflation writer have been far less filled with demands, but I will admit, there have been lots of paralells like Luther Mentioned. I've had people asking for nicer or nastier versions of stories, even one asked to include a modern day celeberity in a story that was set in a fantasy world.
I think the problem is that many of these people just don't understand that someone is handing them free stuff, and beggers can't be choosers.
Sometimes Ill read something, and I think its going where I want it to go, or if it goes another way, itll be a good surprise, but then I get dissapoointed. SOmetimes the artist is not clear what the story is supposed to be (BE, B2E...), so I may imply it on my comment. SOmetimes, I tell him/her how I imagined something going down. I think writers appreciate that, cuz i think its a very feedback demanding thing to do.
As for artists, I'd like a pic so much, I MAY say an interesting way it could have gone, but I do it for the sake of the art. For the sake of keeping the artist motivated to do stuff. More often than not, people will stop doing art or stories, and sometimes Im very constructive in encouraging them, letting them know there are people that are looking his stuff and thinking about it.
Woah, I never expected such a large ammount of replies.
It seems a lot of people have the same or similar experiences.
I feel that sometimes, rarely, I will share an idea or view of another inflation artist commenting on my artwork or even take good advice from them for a future picture.
Part-time Gas Giantess: Rathani over on deviantART has been great with suggestions and tips with her last few comments being on 'Ends.' And a females view on an inflated female is always a good thing to have. Also when my girlfriend is watching me draw, so now I will be able to plan 'destroyed' or stretched clothing better, as to make it look less painful.
As with most of the replies here I can definatley agree that, yes some 'fans' do shoot themselves in the foot/feet.
The things that I draw come from within myself and nobody else, I like that people make suggestions but I will not draw them unless I make a connection with what the person is saying. I did one request on DA, the Violet picture that I'm sure many of you may have seen, it was fun as a first request and it managed to get a fair ammount of attention. Thank you those of you who came by.
Then came the bombardment of requests. Sorry but no people it's not something that I can do every day. Especially with the work I have to do in the week, and the weight gain suggestions... something that I do not do. I draw inflation art, hence the pumps, hoses and air tanks. These are drawings of personal interest that I wish to share with the inflation community. I do not appreciate being told HOW to draw my pictures or what they sould involve.
Unfortunatley now I no longer take requests because of note after note of people telling me to re-draw my pictures in a different way to suit them.
These people who harass and have no understanding of why I can't draw them a picture can go to the deep, nasty, poorly punctuated pit that LutherVKane described.
I am going to continue to submit inflation art to deviantART, but sparingly and when I have created something that I wish to share with the rest of the community.
Thanks for all your replies and thoughts, it's been good to hear other peoples views on this topic. Cheers. ^^
I don't think you can do anything as an artist but express yourself. You can't express other people's selves. You can only do what's in your head and if other people happen to have the same stuff in their head, great.
If you're doing commissions, that's the exception--you've announced "I'll do what you want in this specific arrangement." Maybe you've got room or time or interest for ideas other than your own. But I've never seen anybody START with commissions.
I always get a little rattled when I see the feedback go from commentary to requests to demands. Nothing saps your will to create new stuff faster than that.
I also get suspicious when people show up (here on this site even) and say "Hey, I have a great idea, it's like this, so if someone out there could write it for me and send it to me that'd be great." Yeah, it would, wouldn't it? If someone's asking for ideas or inspiration, that's totally valid. It's when those comments come out of nowhere from someone who hasn't seemingly done anything to help the community yet that I go "Um, no."
I write stories for myself, but I write them with an awareness that other people will read them, and I hope to get good feedback on them after they do. I don't deny that I seek the community's approval. But it comes after whatever I feel like making or it doesn't come at all. And even if it never comes, that's okay too.
But I see that as different than "could you write a story featuring a zebra and a blonde whose name is Amy-Lynn and the following 15 characters from the following 12 episodes of the following 8 anime series." Um, no, dude, that's YOUR story to write. It's in your head already; you have to do the work to make it real now.
Fasinatin' stuff by everyone. I can't really add to any of it outside of a quick thanks to the OP for bringing the subject up in the first place.
Back to lurking.
Back to lurking...
Thanks for the thanks Sievert.
Well, seeing as the majority of statements say that the artwork produced is both for the artist and community... all I can say is same here :) I draw inflation I mostly enjoy, for example I'm not much of a fan of WG unless it's anime, and I really dislike vore. So I won't draw those. I draw water inflation, certain transformations (espec. pool toy :o) and air inflation, and post it for the community to share the enjoyment! Infact if art wasn't published and just kept for oneself, the community would die out, and we wouldn't want that! :(
That's something I didn't think about... I certainly wouldn't want the community archives to dry up.
I've been out of commision in the inflation artists boat for a couple of weeks now, lost my paddle some might say!
I'm trying to come up with some new pieces for my DA gallery, with the community in mind of course, but they'll still be draw from my own personal taste. It's the thing that motivates me the most with inflation art. If I think of something good and get that wonderful fuzzy feeling it just draws itself.
Lets see what happens... and hey maybe in the not too distant future I'll accumulate enough artwork for a gallery here, though thinking about it may be a little redundant as I'm viewable on DA.
Of course,I add to a sleeping thread.
I draw for myself;but,if I had a scanner I would post some things.
I started back when I was 9-10.I would use swimsuit girls pics and mod them by tracing and changing the images,to suit my expansion tastes.
The tracing and changing real pics helped me in body shape study.
I mainly do imagination derived art now.
I enjoy looking at other folks art, because I learn better ways to portray particular things, such as,clothing, motion, swelling actions, body part proportion.
Im not trying to copy anyone,if I see a good artist that can teach me a better way of refining what I do then i will incorporate it.It gives me more satisfaction if it looks more realistic.
I am trying to refine my art to look more real.It is difficult, unless you have a genuine gift for translating reality through your brain and thruogh your hand and onto your paper.
I can picture the images in my mind;but,I still have some problem exactly translating them to the line, without many corrections.
My art has gone completely dead at the moment... I feel pants.
Nothing I imagine will transfer to paper and everything that does make it to paper accordingly finds it's way to the bin.
This is probably the worst artists block I've ever had. *makes a sad, sad face*
I'll keep pushing though. ^^
Just doodle, doesn't have to be perfect or anything. Doodling sometimes help you get rid of the block.
True... I'll give it a shot and see what happens. ^^
My problem is I usually can imagine scenarios but I get frustrated because I cant get something to look just right as Im drawing it.
I can make almost all of a drawing look right except some little thing here and there.
So,I will put it aside and consider it a study, and I will get some new idea about it and then redo it with the new approach.
Then there are the times when, quite frankly Im disturbed by my own character fantasy ideas.HAHAHA!
My problem is I usually can imagine scenarios but I get frustrated because I cant get something to look just right as Im drawing it.

Welcome to the magical world of art.
Yup... welcome to art Digdug-Lee, and don't worry, I (and many others) usually have the same problem.
And artist blocks, doodling helps a whole lot. Much like free-writing for writers.
Hey Tinmible,
What happened with you and DeviantART?
You just disappeared! I understand that you may've answered this question in another thread, or you may want to keep the answer a secret.
I'm not bugging, just wondered is all. ^^
I was going to generally take requests, but usually, I get them that tend to go beyond my own mental state-though I could probably just be selfish in my ways and create what I wish.
Generally, my work on dA has brought out ideas that I have fantasized about for awhile. I recently brought back my inflation art with inflating Faline from Bambi into an enormous round ball. The idea was intriguing, because deer are always so thin.
Though my art has gone into the realm of creating Disney characters and blueberry-ing them, or in the case of one, fattening.

Woops, I didn't notice this question. I'm late on the replying. I seem to always be late on replies. So perhaps I'm ontime for being late?
The main reason is a bit personal, (nothing bad mind you). So I'll just give another answer and say..
A wizard did it.
The biggest problem I've found is taht when someone recommends I draw something, 9/10 of the time it doesn't really inspire me.
Some of the most interesting stuffI've drawn comes from an image I've seen in my head. However, after lamenting that I could not do the image justice, I somehow bring it to being- such as my 'Inflated Faline' and 'Alice in Berryland' concepts at deviantart.
What really frustrates me sometimes, is that I wish I could get more exposure sometimes. That, and get more compliments or critiques on my art. As most people tend to just give favorites and then leave it at that.
A wizard did it.
Darn those wizzards... ^^;
~
uruseiranma, I know what you mean about people just giving faves without commenting.
It's not a complete pain though... It's a good thing, people will see those faves on other peoples pages and come to you when they view it.
If you want more critique on you pictures select 'encouraged' it in your options for Deviation comments when you submit artwork.
Then people should be given the insentive to comment on the artwork more. ^^
But sometimes people won't add comments when you DO set it on 'encouraged", they're more likely going to ignore it. ¬_¬
That's also a true fact... ^^;
Either way sometimes it seems like a losing battle.
The lack of encouraging comments and 'reasonable' ideas can sometimes kill all insentive that an inflation artist has to draw this kind of artwork.
I'm all for nice comments and favourites but when you don't recieve proper feedback from people relating to what you can do to make your artwork better you either end up just submitting the same stuff over and over or get discouraged and stop altogether.
All that some people ask is for an honest oppinion on the work that they've produced.
It doesn't take too long to type an encouraging comment, and with that you may be treated to some good future works.
If the artwork isn't great at least give the artist something that will boost their confidence, but don't flood them with "you should draw this and that and..." let them find their way.
However, if it's great artwork it's still good to give some critique. Show the artist that you appreciate their work and that you look foreward to their next work.
Just an insentive to continue being creative. That's all we ask. ^^
You know,I feel awkward about giving an artist criticisms.I mean,my idea is that everybody has their own style and level of quality. Some of us,are obsessive and draw all the time(I wished I had more time to draw;I Want To Be Obsessive Too!!) and some of us just are kinda bit feeble at it and dont do it much.
I mean,I know when something is obviously wrong with a drawing, but,I just put it in the category of the person just needs to do a lot more practice or perhaps the person just is really bad and anything I say doesnt really matter then.
Some people just have a hard time with perspectives and judging angles.Making something look 3-d on paper or whatever is a pretty good feat actually.
I guess the only time I feel awkward commenting on peoples work is if it's an artist I look up to.
Thing that annoys me most though is when you comment on that artists work or leave a nice message and they don't bother to reply.
Although I appreciate the fact they probably recieve so many admiring comments that they just can't reply to all of them. ^^;
The most amazing thing though is that Jeff Axer, an amazing artist who used to draw for 'Sonic The Comic' many years ago and somebody that I idolize for their artwork, not only replied to one of my comments but actually visited my deviantART page. ^^
Result!
Well,it seems that it just depends on what site your on and how "big" an artist is.
As I have seen on most of the bigger art sites, most artists reply fairly quickly,if viewers are commenting within a short time after the work has been posted.
Usually,Im commenting a long time after a work has been posted, and I dont really expect the artist or writer to reply.
I just like to say that its great or whatever, and point out a particular point that i really enjoyed.Hoping that they may do some more of a particular way of doing a work.
When I see some good artists work,if it is inked and colored and has a finished look, then thats when I would feel awkward mentioning anything negative.
If its a simple line drawing,I may comment on something they could do to make it better,as it looks like a "study" for a better version.
However, unless an artist states "please comment on this",Im not going to say anything critical as I dont want to look like an ass.
well for me it was to draw for the community AND myself. We both shared the same ideas and wants and we got along quite well. But then gradually over the course of hundreds of pictures I lost interest in pleasing others and just drew to please myself, this suddenly shrunk the number of people I dealt with online and has gradually seperated me into specific genere groups.
Now more or less as my financial situation gets worse I draw to make money, not for myself or the community, although the community does ocassionally benefit from it.
Every now and then a fresh idea will pop in and my excitment for the fetish comes back... but as time goes on it gets fewer and further in between.
