Requestors Blacklist

As a writer/artist, who creates drawings and stories for my own benefit and release them free of charge into the community, it's inevitable that people will make requests from time to time. I don't mind this, I'm not a major artist/writer, so I don't get requests often, I see it as a compliment, but I don't do work for other people. If someone has an idea that I actually want to do then I'll do it in my own time. If someone wants me to do something that doesn't appeal then that's fair enough, I don't bear them any malice... but...

There are some people out there who'll get our contact details, and get in touch with us asking if we can write them a story or draw them a picture, and who seem to be under the impression that we owe them something and get agressive when we politely decline. These people really piss me off and I'm seeing a few of them about recently. I see the best way to deal with them is name and shame them. That way people know not to allow them to add you to their lists, and with no-one talking to them they'll soon piss off.

So thus I create the blacklist:
jeremycrawfordj2000 of Yahoo IM, consider yourself blacklisted.

some people amaze me. they just cant seem to do anything for themselves lately they want others to do it for them. they dont realize the time it takes to make drawings or write a story. i know i use to be in art class and a single drawing can take almost up to 4 weeks. i've seen ur work its good keep up the good work and thanks for letting all inflaters know of the morons that get pissed.

Somedude

This jeremycrawford guy is just a YIM troll. If you google his YIM name, you get a bunch of posts about him, and he's treated many unrelated people the same way. So just don't worry too much about this guy.

Tinmible

And this is why you never make your instant messanger contact name public.

deleted_20091014

ah, but if I don't make it public I don't get the nice people either.

Fukureru-Shogun

I talked you you a bit ago Carnatic! I didn't mean to poof away like I did, though. XD;

digdug-lee

That is a good example of a real problem person.
(Not you FukureruS.)
What is this guy contacting and then pretending in his mind he is bossing around Co.underlings??
(Not calling you a underling Carnatic)
^_^

>Many A Quirk...and I don't mind.
>Oh My That's Big...Make It Bigger!

deleted_20091014

Can't remember you 'poofing away' I know people you talk to on the internet are often doing other things at hte same time nad will disappear from time to time, I do it myself.

Dig-dug Lee... there are a few like him, CattyN encounters them all the time, I do occasionally. Because we set our personas up as artists and writers and give our work freely to the community; some people just get the impression that we are just a service that they can call on for their own requirements and that we are somehow obliged to provide that service. They've gotten used to getting free artwork and literature and if we stop providing it, go on hiatus or make it clear that while we give it to the community we mianly do it for ourselves, they get angry.

And some people just like to behave like asses.

Heh, times like this I'm glad that i write...most of the trolls don't go begging for you to write a story for them, although I have had one or two...

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith.

I blew my stack about this sense of entitlement thing when I vacated the Vault. In case you missed the rant, it's here.

I generally try to steer the beggars into giving it a shot themselves. I know it's futile but when people approach you with a really specific idea of something that you don't share the passion for, and then get hostile about it, it's really not your problem. On that guy's end, he's probably opening up to another human being about his twisted fetish for the first time...and then if anything goes wrong, he feels angry and rejected. Not that you did anything wrong, Carn -- I support the blacklist -- but I can almost understand why he'd act that way if this was his one big shot at some form of acceptance, public or private. Which is, again, not your cross to bear!

Heh...ya know? I have to say that this is a real good idea. Consider these kind of people spam. Ya know? Those junk e-mail messages you get trying to sell you Viagra? Some how some way they'll get your contact information and contact you and ask for stuff. Since its something that you don't want you can blacklist them and provide the list here or anywhere so they can know to avoid these people! I think it'll work the same as we block spam e-mails. It'll be interesting!

Never let those who dislike what you enjoy get to you. If they won't bother to understand than it's not worth your time. Hold your head up high and be proud for what you like!

DwarfPriest

Hmm.. CattyN tried to do it once, and people didn't like the idea.

deleted_20091014

I depends how people use it... it has to be done without malice, you know... be a public information service, rather than just a rant about whoever may have offended you. I've forgotten about that guy now, but it still annoyed me when he appeared out of the blue to call me an asshole so I thought it would be best if others knew to avoid him.

MaximillianZetoX

Well its obvious that people aren't going to like it. Do you think spammers like it when you block their spam messages? Nope! It's basically the same foundation but like spam filters those can be abused and even block legitimate e-mails in this case legitimate people. But that's how it is if you implement these filters. False positives, yo.

Never let those who dislike what you enjoy get to you. If they won't bother to understand than it's not worth your time. Hold your head up high and be proud for what you like!

I think thats the guy that heckled me when i posted my stories. He freaked me out too. Our conversation went like Carnatic's. He stops using sentences and punctuation, and does an angry face.

I understand the frustration, but I don't think such a list is worth the effort it will take to maintain - you'll also run the risk of unnecessarily antagonizing people, possibly making things worse. Giving them attention is like throwing petrol on a fire.

I think Inflate123 has the right idea - in a polite reply, try to steer such requesters into giving it a go themselves. If they are rude to begin with or insist on behaving rudely or are simply unable to communicate intelligently after a polite response, then the best remedy is to just ignore them. It simply is not worth the expended energy getting worked-up over it.

Bob_King

This is why I don't even put my email details on my website. I'm pretty much a fairweather part of the community and only get around to doing stuff for it when I've got time (I rarely make time for it). But back in the day I'd get emails like this:

"I like ur story rite more NOW. Make a woman pop"

Sometimes they'd write back again with more aggrevation that I'd not done as I'd been told. I can only presume that these folks either don't have English as their first language, or come from a place where it's okay to make rude demands.

I don't have a solution to the situation, but if there is anyone out there who likes a particular artist or writer and would like to see more work from them, then remember you need to make them WANT to do more work. Send them an email saying why you like their work and what makes them unique in the community. Tell them what your ideas are and why you've approached them rather than a similar artist. Everyone likes getting positive feedback and encouragement. It certainly beats:

"draw sum mor grlz goin boooom!!!!!"

I actually was contacted by the same jeremy creature, he wanted exactly the same thing with the addition of me taking pics of myself for him. He didn't offer anything in return except abuse. Wanker.

o.o' Well, at least I'm not the only guy Jeremy's contacted.

I don't really post things, I'm more of a lurker since I'm unsure of my ability. But about a month or two ago, he contacted me, asking me to write stories based off of Smallville/Charmed...7th Heaven, even. I told him I don't watch mainstream stuff like that (I'm more the anime freak) and he just disappeared, didn't even bother to respond.

He pulled the same thing a couple days ago, asking me for another Smallville story. And once again, didn't even bother to respond when I told him I don't know about it.

So, yeah...my question. Where the hell did he pick my name to ask for stuff if I don't post anything? o.o'''

Somedude

I doubt this jeremy person is actually seriously requesting these things. Don't feed the troll, people.

drkdragon1

Still, it's quite irritating that someone contacts you purely for their own benefit. If they don't really expect something, then they're bothering us for their own amusement. Man, at least strike up a conversation sometime, instead of asking, 'Do you write stories? Can you write me a story based on this?'

Ah well...his name is getting out there, so the virus can be contained.
