Image Editing Software

I recently discovered an image editing program that's actually quite good: getpaint.net

Best of all, it's free!

If you can't afford PS or the like, this is a good alternative and would work as a great primer for when you decide to upgrade to a commercial product. It has the look and feel of PS with features such as layering and tool use and there are many add-ins available. Being freeware, it has some limitations (like text not being vector based) but I tried it out and found it easy to use and was pleased with the results.

GIMP is an open source alternative that is used by many professionals, and it is multi-platform.

Uh huh. I tried both of them, and I think I prefer GIMP, though I can still get something good with Paint.net.

Good find SvenS!
I'd recommend checking out both of those programs as alternatives to Photoshop and Illustrator, etc.

They're FREE and easy to work with, brilliant for beginners to digital art, colouring etc.

I'd go grab them myself, but I already got over £4000's worth of Adobe for free in the form of the CS3 Master Collection. ^_^;
(and no, I don't endorse piracy I just happened to stumble upon it and said why not?) ^_^

The only problem I seem to have, though, is that there's no actual vector drawing (aside from text).

Yeah, that's one thing that I didn't like about it. Once you define a shape or put down some text, it flattens on the layer. So, if you make a mistake setting something down, you've got to do it over again. Overall, I just thought it was a nifty little program that was easy to use.
