I'm interested in this... I like the idea of an ancient greek level of development, it's not often explored in fantasy. Although you do know that the level of technology enjoyed by ancient Greeks is greater than that enjoyed by medieval Europeans?
Brand new world
I have dozen of pages (chapters 1 and 2) of, say, novel . It is in russian :( . I lack skill to translate it properly, however, I'd like to discuss some features of my fictional universe. Laws of nature allow inflatable life there, so thats not an offtop :) .
- World is huge and 99.9999% of its volume is filled with atmosphere. The only land present are floating rocks (isles), most of em very small and often uninhabitable. Technology is at level of ancient Greece (or even worse, depends on place). There is magic, but it is extremely rare thing: kinds of visionary, telepathy and probably even inter-universe travel. So, moving between bits of terra firma is a difficult business. To make things worse, there mighty and unstable air-streams, periods of stormy weather et.c. The only way for travel and trade is flight. And to do so they inflate someone. There is no helium (nor even chemistry), however some fern-like plants use negative mass gas to keep erect (and compete for sunlight with other flora). Thats why isles float, btw, there are large amounts of float-gas inside isles.
Eh. Its 03:30 am here :( I'll finish this post next time.
I hardly care about Ancient Greek Technology. There are interesting characters who are historically famous. But, I would avoid... *given Sandies Shortbread Fudge Drops* ... change that, yer good in my opinion. Don't be afraid to come to us for polishing and correcting. Be sure to have a hot merchant's daughter. But it's just me, go for what rocks yer boat.
(Damn... I'm a sucker for shortbread cookies. *munch munch*)
Although you do know that the level of technology enjoyed by ancient Greeks is greater than that enjoyed by medieval Europeans?
Funny, I thought they were rumored to have relatively superior technology to even the 19th-century world. After all, who could argue with a primitive but functioning astrological computer or a solar death ray?
But back on topic now. This looks like a very interesting concept here. Only thing is, I'm sure they would have to have a hierarchial system if it is to imitate ancient Greece, with the lower (working) classes being the ones to inflate for trade and travel. The higher-ups would just do it for fun.
I don't think it was supposed to literally imitate ancient greece, just the technology.
Yes. Greece was for comparison only.
Hierarchy is a constant and it does not depend on tech level :(
On most isles society is kind of aristocratic oligarchy or rarely monarchy. Famous ancestors are generally more important than money (and traders are regarded as third sort people).
Having children is a luxury. Average lifespan for those inflatable folk is beyond two hundred years, and 90% of lives end in accidents (or "accidents"). Total population is limited and some High Council decides what is the limit, and who is worthy to have a child if there is a vacant place. Of course this system is not just, reason for intrigues and constant dogfight between high families.
There are some reasons for birth-control, for an unknown reason overpopulated isles, like their legendary capital of old times, accidentally cease to levitate and then fall into abyss...
Common belief is local demiurg has created universe for his fun (and that theory is correct :) ). So they think, god just hates big crowds.
Birth without permission is punished by deflating until there is vacant space. There is never any vacant space present, so this means forever. The only other option is exile. Sometimes citizens of big cities (isles) get bored, or just want children, and so migrate to some virgin uncolonized isle. Most of free land is covered with jungle or even worse desert, though. And this is of course one way trip. Chances of migrating to a city with decent population are next to zero (as there are their own guys and gals eager to fill any vacant place with their descendants).
Traders are people without home, they can go wherever they want being guests everywhere. Mighty trade guilds are rumored to have bases ( and locations of that isles is top secret ), however merchants rarely spend much time on solid land. This profession is very risky, due to erratic air currents it is difficult to be sure about ever getting to destination.
For inflatable folk inflation is a common thing an there is no any special fun in it (there are exceptions of course). Being flight-balloon is not a respected job at all, but it is a step to aerogator or wind-tamer. Proud aristocrats even consider it shame.
If anybody is inflated (to normal shape or above) for too long, matter of 'skin' starts to get tired, more and more vulnerable to physical damage. So you have to deflate and 'sleep' for a day or two. Problem is finding someone trustworthy, as deflated person is totally helpless. This is a Big problem for tyrants and despotic monarchs, and even for some ppl who are married for a long time...
Still there is at least one person very surprised by being inflatable - primary hero. This guy appears to be from Earth, or world very alike ours. He finds himself in a strange forest on a rather remote, provincial island after a short trip he finds a settlement, but gets slapped by a branch of some plant sporting numerous sharp thorns... He deflates (slowly) and his chances are really miserable as period of storms is about to start. Local girl finds him and reinflates. She is rather puzzled by his looks, strange and uncomfortable (from her point of view) clothing, and his language. For the first days, they do not understand each other and communicate via few simple words and gestures ... This leads to misunderstanding.
He wants to get home (and this is other world).
She decides world is merely other isle, guy is from some big city (and his strange clothes is due weird metropolitan fashion). Certainly that guy wants to get home... and that is an extremely rare opportunity for her to leave that boring place she lives at, marry him and get citizenship...
As she speaks about distant isle with 'culture', 'science', wizardry and better life, he gets this as "There is place where wise and mighty ppl live, they'll help you".
Presence of guest is kept in secret (for he has no right to reside on isle). When storms end they decide to fly together towards 'big city'.
Wow, this is very good stuff. Keep on writing!
Sample of my writing. Question: is it worth effort?
There are grammar faults, I'll seek and destroy them, but still there is need for some voluntarily editors.
For an unbearably long second my eyes remain closed. Good for them, good for me, no urgency, nothing reminds about its existence, not even weight of my body. Delightful, yes. This should be a dream, of course. Real zero-gravity causes nausea, entire subconsciousness panics et.c, I know it too well. So this is just a dream, yes? But what the hell does sunlight, passing through eyelids, does in my dream? There shouldn't be any sun here, in the Alex's hall, thanks to thick curtains and late evening. Though that grass was really marvelous, I guess Alex's uncle Bas, will be mad, once found our erhm, curiousity and eager for experimenting with his deposits. Well, sunlight was still here. So I've finally looked around, just to discover myself somwhere on the fourth floor altitude, literally liying on the soft fern-like crowns of a weirdest forest I've ever seen. Really damn marvelous grass.
Same sunlight was piercing every vivid green leave, dying scene in colors of malachite, I've felt dizzy and snapped nearest branch hastily. Strange, these leaves and branches were not looking that strong, how did they manage to bear my weight, would they give soon? Not being that eager of discovering answer for the latter question, I've made my way to the closest milk-white tree trunk. As I moved absence of my weight, was becoming clear. No gravity? Is it Earth? Assuming this is alien world, with next no gravity, why there is atmosphere. Picture around me was so real, it has swept all thoughts of dreaming, hallucinogens et.c. At least agoraphobia was genuine and natural, as well as my sigh of relief, when I've got to the firm, rough column of unknown herb. One of thousand around me. These plants were so tall and had leaves on their tops, like palms do. Probably, it was due to competition for sun energy.
Trying not to look downwards, I started climbing down. The main problem were occasional branches, bouncing against me, slapping my face, well, doing they best to stop me from reaching ground. At the level of twice my height, I've decided to just jump towards surface, I've descended slowly, not hit but touched heap of dead leaves. Finally terra firma. Thanks to thick herbal crowns above me, it was kind of green twilight here.
Already posted part has been edited, though, I see no reason of reposting it.
And next piece:
I had to go towards clearing, I've seen from the height, though heading was not clear. I've decided against climbing upwards again, and tried direction that seemed least overgrown with vegetation. It was difficult to make ones way through this kind of jungle, soon any sense of direction was lost. Though grass and shoots of local plants were not that dense, latter were very stubborn and refused to be moved aside, in fact I had to squeeze in gaps between trunks and branches.
After a long struggle first diffused drops of daylight started to peer beyond the wall of abundant flora. Moving froward became a lot easier due to lesser density of fern-trees and moral boost, as thoughts of losing myself inside alien jungle fade. Margin of vegetation took me completely by surprise, as by coincidence it was also a margin of land here, I've barely kept balance and then fallen backwards panting deeply. The Abyss stood before my eyes, though, I could not see it from my current position. Blue skies, with occasional white clouds and tiny disks of various colors, reminding lucky coins on the bottom of a fountain. With one but very important difference: there were no bottom in this case. As initial shock passed, curiosity took over. Finally, I've carefully crouched towards edge, ground was going slightly uphill here, few steps before border grass vanished revealing naked rock. Cliff on the outer side was perfectly upright, and smooth like a mirror. I've been really lucky to stay on the ground in the first time, as wind was blowing outwards bearing small leaves and dust with it. While wind was not a storm, it could easily take me with, thanks to my weight in this weird place.
I have no idea about time passed while looking into Abyss, or might it be Abyss looking into me? Alien world. What was a wild game of imagination, then logical syllogism I did not believed in my heart, now came to be indisputable obvious fact.
As a history buff I take offense on saying worse right after talking anything about ancient greece.
There is a pic on DA where it implies a world where women are inflated as a means of travel. good economy haha
