Need some help with digital coloring

I recently tried using Gimp to digitally color my artwork, but it seems that I have no clue what I'm doing. I tried reading the manual, but that didn't answer my questions.

I'd like to get some advice with someone who has Gimp experience or can recommend an easier program to use. If you'd like to help, You can PM me or we can chat on IM/skype.

IDK if GIMP follows this style but i'll give this a try!

Ok, from what I understand, coloring a pic works like layers and from my understanding, GIMP runs a layer system.

Create a Line version of your work, layering all of the pieces from the front to the back. You have to look at the flat screen in a 3D way.

Ok, while I didn't color this, Balloon Kitty's work can show what I'm talking about.

Each piece is stacked in layers with Peach's Right Arm being the closest to the screen, followed by her breasts, then both her left arm, her head, and belly under that, then her rear under the belly, then the bottom of the dress under the rear.

Color each layer by having the line layer above the color layer and a shading layer and a light layer above the color, but below the Lines.

This is how I would take it anyway, but in Illustrator where you can bend each line and fill at the same time with no worry of artifacting.

0.0; Wow, I still really have no clue what I'm doing. I do appreciate the advice, but I think I should try taking a class for this.
