When I was in college, I took a class on short stories. Strangely enough, I didn't learn much that helped with my writing. I did, however, encounter a rather interesting story called Gogol's Wife. From the summary:

After setting the reader up for some perhaps prurient "facts," the narrator tells us that Gogol's wife was a life-sized balloon, anatomically correct and quite voluptuous.
