I picked up an Apple iPad, and I'm enjoying it most as a reader. I've created fancy PDFs with page layout apps, and now I've added various eBook formats to my toolbox. I've tried digital comic books on my computer, but they didn't excite me all that much. Then along came the iPad and a digital comic book reader from the App store, and suddenly all those old, public domain comics are easier to read. (I haven't tried any of the new comic systems, although I know some new formats are on the way, like Graphic.ly.)
The established comic book formats are .cbr and .cbz, essentially .rar and .zip archives of scans with a manual change to the document extention. Sure, one can always view BERRYGIRL in any JPEG viewer, but I wanted to try the comic book format. Looks great on the iPad! I'll have to talk to Uruseiranma about his BEACH BLANKET BLUEBERRY project.
Also, some formats, like ePub, an eBook format, can support video. It reminds me of SINKHA, a "multimedia graphic novel" I encountered in 1995. I was so hopeful the format might catch on. Perhaps the time has come...
