Prose that Blows 5: THE RESULTS

carnatic

That's a very clever premise. It was in the initial spirit of PTB to set challenges like this. I hope this one gets lots of entries.

I like the idea very much.
By the way, does word limit count articles and prepositions?

doubleintegral
doubleintegral's picture

If your word processor counts it as a word, then it's a word.

nineteenthly

This is an absolutely brilliant idea! I'll probably have a go at it even if i miss the deadline.

This is going to be tough and I am going to enjoy it.

Just finished my story. Cha-ching, fist pump, etc. etc.

Cool, and I'm in the first 30% still. I thought writing short story would be fast. It isn't

Hey do you take suggestions for ideas for pros the blows? Because I got, what I think anyway, a pretty spiffy Idea for one if your interested.

I think we're always open for ideas. You'll find our Email addresses on the prose that blows link DI provided.

We are now up to three submissions with just a little over two weeks to go. Let's pick up the pace people!

Mine is done, but I'm holding off on submitting it because I'm an obsessive tweaker. I've made little changes to this story two or three times per week. I'm pretty much like this with all my stories, which may be why I've got half a dozen partly-written pieces clogging my documents folder.

Murkstorm

I'm dealing with some real life issues currently, but with a little luck (and a few dozen boiled leprechauns brewed into a potion for it) I'll get an entry in this time.

Pakona

I'm in the process of finishing up my entry. I'm glad I got around to writing something this time.

Inflate123

I tweaked for about a week and finally submitted. Really eager to see how everybody approaches this one.

Pakona

Just a reminder. The contest is coming to a close. All submissions are due by Friday.

I have a question, I'm new here and I want to join in, do you have to have a specific number of posts, or is it just a free for all?

doubleintegral
doubleintegral's picture

You have to have at least -1 posts.

In all seriousness, anyone can participate and it's not just for people on this web site. But you only have two days! OMGWRITEFASTWTF

nineteenthly

Finally submitted. I CAN'T STAND THE PRESSURE!

Will the stories be available to read shortly after 12 this evening, or later?

All of the entries I've received to this point are already entered into the blog and scheduled to go live at 2:30am eastern time. That's just to give me enough time to post any entries that come in right before the deadline (I will be out most of this evening). If nothing else comes in between now and then I will make them go live right after the deadline.

TheRedWasp

@_@ I just realized that I used one of the banned words in my entry without realizing it.

Since I didn't catch it on the first read-through, and since you noticed it before the deadline, send me a revision and I'll make the change.

Rathani

I barely got my entry in on time. That was probably one of the trickiest editing jobs I've faced lately, but it was excellent practice in writing for brevity and varying word choice.

throwaway261

Rathani, Heliumgirl, and Inflate123? This is going to be a great contest!

Due to a couple of minor housekeeping things, and because I feel asleep at my computer last night, I am holding back the stories for now. They'll be posted "sometime today or tonight".

Sounds like a good story title to me.

Stories and the voting system going up in about 2.5 hours from the time of this post.

I happened to notice that as of right now, it appears that several entries to the contest only appear in the sidebar and it's not possible to vote for them in the actual poll.

doubleintegral
doubleintegral's picture

Dammit! I knew I would forget something despite checking everything 2-3 times. I also accidentally had one of the polls closed so that it wouldn't accept votes. Idiot.

All of the above has been fixed... hopefully?

InvizKing

This appears to be one of the best turnouts in terms of quality - I was totally outclassed. It's very difficult to see a clear winner this go-round.

AlecDeluxe
AlecDeluxe's picture

I agree with InvizKing: These stories are great! I am (pardon me) blown away. On the downside, voting is going to be a pain, because I could easily see a 4- or 5-way split between best story, funniest story, etc. Gonna be tough.

I want to pop so much I could burst!

Inflate123
Inflate123's picture

Same here -- a great, diverse array of approaches. I read them all, wrote down multiple early favorites under each category, then came back to that list two days later and re-evaluated my picks. I wound up reading all the stories at least twice each before voting, and some of those votes I really agonized over.

In other words...great job(s)!

darth_clone19

The level of quality in these entries owes a lot to the creative challenge. Amazing job, everyone.

I've been racking my brain for two weeks and still don't know who to vote for. Too many good entries, not enough awards to go around.

You've got three more hours to decide.

doubleintegral
doubleintegral's picture

The results have been posted. Full vote totals are at the site, but here's all of the winners:

Most Original Story (tie): heliumgirl77 & myself
Funniest Story: Luther Kane
Least Contrived Use of a Thesaurus: heliumgirl77
And, finally, Best Story (tie): heliumgirl77 & Rathani

Think heliumgirl77 took home a little hardware? Jesus. Very well deserved, though.

The voting for this one sure was interesting. As others here predicted, the voting was definitely spread out due to the overall quality of the stories. I kept tabs on the voting the last couple of weeks, and you should've seen it. I don't remember which award it was for (maybe Best Story), but after about five days about ten stories each had only one vote. It was nuts.

Here's to a good contest. Stay tuned for the announcement of PTB6 in late May.

throwaway261

I knew I'd be kicking myself later for not voting for my own story. Could have tied for runner up of "Best Story." Still won't vote for myself if I enter next time, however. Fun contest, great reads. Can't wait till the end of the month. Any ideas for the next contest?

We've already got a plan in place for PTB6, but feel free to discuss ideas. They can always be considered for future contests.

No, you did the right thing -- and I would hope nobody else is voting for themselves either! Just means we'll both have to try harder next time.

I was bummed not to get any votes this time but I would have felt a lot worse if I knew the only vote I did get came from myself. All the votes that were cast were well earned!
