Should I change the content rating system?

I’m looking for some feedback on how I can improve the content rating system on this site.

You can give a score to pictures and stories, rating them from one to five stars, but currently the only rating you can see is your own. You can’t see average scores, and this is deliberate. For now the scores only serve one purpose: to power to content recommendation system.

My biggest concern was that I didn’t want fledgling authors/artists to be scared off or discouraged if their early works did poorly. But it’s a double-edged sword. Artists who produce highly rated works never find out. And lately I’ve been questioning whether the cost is worth benefit, if there’s any benefit at all.

So I’ve decided to reach out to the audience. What do you all think? What would you like to see?

I think the general score could be displayed only from three stars onward, and if it reaches a ceratin amount of votes. Otherwise it could be just absent. So when it doesnt have a general score, it doesn't necessarily mean it has poor scores: Maybe it has few visits or people didn't vote it.

This way the artist is not discouraged(well, maybe some anxious ones will be anyway, he he).

Well, if that were disabled, then how would the artist be able to receive honest feedback. Criticism (As long as it is constructive.) is an important part of writing and drawing, it will help for the artist to improve.

So, as a solution, I propose that a short explanation be written when one provides a rating to describe why they think it deserves said rating.

That gives me another idea: That the person that uploads the image chooses between two options.
One option could be "Display low ratings" and the other "Do not display low ratings"

Perhaps a simpler facebook-esque 'like' button (or we could call it recommend) might work better if we want a rating system that fairly rewards good content but doesn't have an actively negative element. If people want to give constructive criticism then they should, having the opportunity to rate something 1 or 2 stars benefits nobody. There's no reason for readers to want know which content is rated poorly, they're interested in good reviews, not bad; and there's no benefit to the creator of telling them you don't like their work if you don't even say why.

With a simpler rating system that requires less numerical thinking on the part of readers, you could introduce a few different categories to rate a story on. i.e. would you recommend this for 'female inflation/male inflation/popping/floating/etc.' If you're looking for a good popping story then you could look for the highest-rated stories for popping, the fact that it's more niche and therefore stories would be less rated is inherently taken account of.

I'd like to see more ratings.  Low ratings don't bother me because I assume in this fetish of tremendous variety, there are people to whom my approach is unsatisfying.  This is fine, it bothers me not.  Then there are the people that just don't like me or my work.  This also is fine, it bothers me not.

There are some authors out there though that could maybe benefit from a little discouragement.  Or, there are some authors out there that the community could benefit from a little discouragement.

I don't personally feel the need to see other's ratings of content.

I'm happy to let the system do it's mysterious rating job without showing me what others thought. I would, however like to have the ratings I have given visible to me. The ability to sort the Library by my personal Star rating would help me rate things more consistently, improving recommendations and streamlining the algorithm's comparisons for others as well.

A way to avoid the "Scaring new authors off" while still having a positive feedback notice available to the authors of liked works would be to simply only tell creators if their stories are doing well, like with "Achievements" posted on their content that they could see (But not have to share if they don't want.)

Small notes on stories such as "10-20- 30 - 100 etc People have favorite-ed this story."

"25 people have given this a good or better Rating."

"This item has a total of 350 stars" (whether that's 350 1-star reviews or 70 five star reviews, that could be up for them to suss out.)

I think you need to look at the biggest rating system in the world and that has to be Facebook. You can only like. I have some pictures on xhamster which you can thumb down on. It really annoys me the whole rating system there. For me thanks or likes. No 1 out of 5 system. I didn't put my pictures here before anyone asks because some of them have nudity in them.

Bondage with Inflation.... what more could a girl ask for. If you wish to chat to me I am on xhamster. It is a free adult porn site and you will need a profile. Again this is free. Just let me know your from here and you wish to chat about inflating me

Something similar to the "Like" feature is already in place. Every picture, story, and even forum post has an "Add to Favorites" link at the bottom. You can view anyone's favorites in their user profile page. However there's currently no way to view how many people have faved a particular piece. I should add this.

Showing what ratings you've already given is also a good idea. I'll work on that.

I put both favorites and and ratings in place because I see them as serving to very different purposes. Favorites are public, and a way of measuring how many people like your work. Ratings measure how popular your work is within the community overall. Both of these could be useful pieces of information.

I was looking at some of the data, and there are some interesting divergences. There stories with extremely high ratings, but few favorites. There are also stories with extremely low ratings, but lots of favorites. Showing both might highlight the differences between the two.

I'm leaning toward showing more information rather than less. Again, I'm not convinced the benefits of obscuring outweigh the costs.

Why not use the reddit/youtube system of upvote/downvote rather than rating, you probably find most people either choose extreme low or high numbers anyway.

In general, people use the higher ratings more than they use the lower ratings. The rough breakdown:

1 Star: ~5%
2 Stars: ~10%
3 Stars: ~25%
4 Stars: ~20%
5 Stars: ~35%

I think everyone should see the ratings. Up till now I thought they could, somehow, even if I couldnt see anything myself lol I always thought I missed something others didnt.

Seeing if people like your stuff is great motivation, but if criticism is going to drive someone away, then maybe posting stuff in the internet isnt for them.

I agree with Darth Clone.  I'd love to see how others rate my works, whether good or bad.

Something I miss from the old site was being able to sort via number of views.  Occasionally you'd find a gem that others had panned.

Average ratings are now visible on story pages. Will eventually add them to the Library display.

Thanks, LVK.  This has turned out to be very interesting for a number of different reasons:

1.  I've yet to find a story with more than about 15 ratings.  I suppose this is because until now there was no obvious benefit to rating a story.  I know I've only rated a handful.  I almost wish the ratings had been public since the beginning.

2.  For the most part, I've yet to find a collective rhyme or reason to the average ratings.  I've clicked through some of my favorite stories throughout the years and thought "WTF?  Only 3 stars?!"  I've also checked out the ratings on some stories I haven't liked and thought "WTF?  Why did people like this crap?!"  Look no further for evidence that people's tastes can be very picky.  I'm looking forward to being able to sort by average rating, if that's in the works, to see what the overall "top rated" stories are.

3.  I think the ratings generally skew somewhere between 0.5-1 star low.  Would be curious to know the opinions of others on that subject.

4.  IMO it would also be good to know the number of "faves" a story has received.  This would better allow us to compare a story's reception here to a story's reception on DeviantArt, and trying to find many analogs between the ratings here and faves there is proving difficult for me.

As regards the favorites system.........I don't really think it is reliable. As many of the long time members here don't choose to favorite anything; neither stories nor images.
