just random good news

so instead of 500 dollars I now have 900 dollars for a laptop (well, thats my limit since 400 dollars of it is from my student loans) at this point, I already have a plan for what specs I want. Now I am gonna find a computer brand that is trustworthy. I will count out toshiba since I never got a working laptop from them, but any other brand is fair game. And im also not buying one from the internet just in case. I go to best buy next week, so what are the best computer brands for you guys?

I have good experience with Lenovo. Quality. It's like the "Glock" of computers hehe ;)

If all you want it for is to search the web and work tools like word and maybe watch movies and stuff, 900 bucks is overkill. Dont pay for specs you wont need.

Actually, I will also need it for my big video projects on youtube, and eventually, I might do playthroughs and such. That, and maybe I can work on guitar hero 3 custom songs on it without serious hiccups.

You fool! The internet is where the good deals are! You could save at least 250$ if you go to Best Buy find the laptop and then buy it off of New Egg or Tiger Direct! I can't let you waste that much money! 900$ Is like my entire life's earnings!

I dont even know what laptop I will get yet. and im sure that I will not use all 900 dollars all at once. As for why im not getting it online, I had bad luck with my last laptop which was bought online. I constantly had to send it back for hard drive failure and screen issues, and it was sold dirt cheap when I got it too.

Oh… I meant buy a new laptop online via preferably New Egg… Not used… I didn't even know that was a thing… If the most graphically intensive thing you plan on using is Guitar Hero 3 then I suggest putting most of your money into buying a laptop with a big hard drive and a fuck ton of RAM… It'll be really worth while when mass managing video files…

that's the plan. My mom got advice from a person who made my last computer. Now my mom thinks I should get this $329.99 hp pavillion instead, but after checking the reviews it got, it seems slow as dirt and the hard drive could fail on me. I'd rather shell out twice as much of that or more if that means I'm gonna get something faster and more durable. or even better, I'd like to make my own choice now that i'm old enough to do that. I still have a few days, so I'm going to check more reviews until I find a computer that I'm sure will work for my needs.

I have four simple rules for buying laptops:

1.  DO NOT buy a Toshiba.

2.  DO NOT buy a computer off the shelf at Best Buy or a similar electronics store unless it's a MacBook Pro.

3.  DO NOT buy a "home" laptop from any manufacturer (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.).  Business products only.  Look beyond the specs - business-grade systems have better warranty support, better driver/BIOS support, better human support, and longer lifecycles.  All of that is critically important for laptops which are naturally more fragile than desktops and need to last longer (because they are impossible to upgrade beyond RAM and HDD/SSD).

4.  DO NOT spend less than $500, absolute bare minimum, before tax/shipping.  You get what you pay for, especially with laptops.  If you spend less than $500, after the warranty expires any repairs you have to pay for out of pocket will cost more than your laptop is worth (except for RAM/HDD/SSD).

You say you have $900 to spend; throw every last penny of it at a ThinkPad or a Dell Latitude.  If you're really looking for something that can handle gaming and/or video-intensive tasks (such as recording a game you're playing), you'll need a good GPU and your budget may not be big enough for a laptop with that kind of horsepower and reliability.  Consider a desktop instead.

JMHO.

DI who does IT is correct on all counts. Home laptops have worse warranties, business ones are expected to last at least 3-4 year cycles (warranty may be shorter), they're easier to upgrade and are usually sturdier built. Though saying that I had a cheap home ASUS laptop which lasted nearly 7 years with hard home use. Your mileage may vary.
