Gym language

Hello dear all!

A little help here?

I'd appreciate some help with the typical language of the gyms - British English version please.

Is anybody here who can help me with this?

Thanks!

Lopni

Thanks a lot to those who helped!

Like lingo? Terms like that include benching, max-outs, sets, reps, etc..

If you're looking for average sounds heard around the room, I can tell you I remember vulgar rap music, clanking of weights, and plenty of profanity from my high school weight training class a few years ago. :P

Lopni

Yep, yesterday I had a really good introduction by one of the senior members here.

What are max-outs?

What is lingo?

Also - and that is not for the gym, but for competitions - what is all right to say about success and failure? What do people say to themselves, to others when they succeed or don't succeed?

For imaginary world, I already have a general public language for inflation, and scientific language - a mix of real world scientific terms and management jargon. What I lack is pros - those who earn money in inflation. And I guess sports is the closest similar thing in the real world.

Lingo is just jargon, terms used in that field.

Max-outs, as the name suggests, are the maximum amount of reps/weight that one person can perform/lift on a certain workout.

I never really competed much, but it IS a gym, so rememeber to keep it vulgar. :P Expressions like "kicked their ass" or "got our asses handed to us" are good.

Thanks!

Can I ask what "lingo" is? Is it the exercise for specific muscle like "glutes" and "delts"?

It's interesting you mention rough language. I didn't encounter it at martial arts - we were polite and corteous with each other, even when we injured each other. Never heard a strong word there in six years. It might depend on the trainer which of two ways of motivation he/she chooses.

Can you give a few more examples of the language you mentioned?

Torterra Inflation

Well, there's probably a big difference between a martial arts class and a high school weight room. :P

Yes, that's what I meant by lingo. Specific muscle training and exercises, sets and reps, etc..
