and the like are definitely fun reads - but most of all they are entertaining exercises.

 

Let's collect such fantasy games of mind - we have threads about how to write about fantasy correctly, why not a thread how to calculate a fantasy? ^_^

 

And since I'm posting this, let me put a small exercise here.

 

Filling with helium to inflate is one fantasy option, another fantasy option is turning into gas. Let's calculate that.

Mass transfer law states that the total mass of the object should always stay the same: M = const

Take the molar mass of all elements human body consists of - and try to combine them into the same amount of gases (matters that are gaseous at room temperature). You will find it is possible, even more - the answers are many, meaning it is possible in a variety of ways.

As ridiculous as it may sound, the fantasy process of reversible inflation doesn't violate the physical law of mass transfer. Besides, it's a fun exercise.

Currently I'm fascinated with glicolisis - the fact that human body produces it's mass in glucose byproducts every day just to sustain itself is amazing - it's so effortless, we don't even notice it! What strength we produce with our arms and legs out of this fuel is even more amazing. I don't think it will be a big effort for a body to produce it's mass in some gases, if some fantasy gene would command it to - in a fantasy universe, where laws of physics and biology are same as ours but inhabitants are slightly different.
