Yahoo Messenger Clients and Servers being shut down.

I've brought up before that I felt YIM's days were numbered, it seems increasingly buggy and being the crappy piece of software it is, most people outside this website would shed no tears. The main reason we clung onto it as a community was simply because so many of us were using it, we had established contact lists we didn't want to try and rebuild and you can't RP on your own.

Well this time it's happening. On August the 5th to be precise. This only applies to using it through apps and client software, it will still exist through your browser, but that's not really suitable for what we want to use it for. I'm often not sat at my computer when RPing... if you follow my drift.

Last time I suggested we use Skype (note Skype isn't only for video chats, you can regular chat on it too), there are apps for most platforms as well as browser-based and PC and Mac clients. Plus it's owned by Microsoft and it's popularity should ensure it's around for a while, or at least would be replaced rather that shut down.

That suggestion remains.

I am carnatichall@hotmail.com on Skype.

That's not entirely accurate.

It'll still exist on apps as well.  It's the current YIM that's expiring, but the replacement version is already released.  No big deal.

Why not Google Hangouts? Gmail accounts are easy to come by, mobile apps are readily available, and Hangouts chat is built into Gmail on the web (and there is a Chrome desktop extension).

A few of my friends have recommended Discord, but I haven't had a chance to try it out myself yet, so I'm not sure how well it works.

Discord is pretty fantastic. You can add people to chat with text, or voice, directly. Making your own channel is quick and easy and you can very easily invite people to it, where everyone can chat and evne share files and pictures with ease.

I simply moved to Skype a while back, most of the people I used to talk to on YIM had vanished anyway.

Might be something to note, but I heard Verizon just bought Yahoo. This pretty much puts everything up in the air. Yahoo has been failing for a long time now. Might expect a huge overhaul that will see YIM even more likely to go the way of the dino.

Yeah, thinking I'll go over to Skype as well.

Peculiar... But given it's the 10th over here in upsidedownland, and I can still use the classic Yim... What's the word? o.o
