Tips for using Blender

So for a while now, I've been getting various models from games and using blender to morph them to be inflated. While I manage to do this, it doesn't look as good as they could be. I do this by messing with the vertices in edit mode and basically experimenting with it. Is there anything like the location of the vertices or the type of curve that could improve the outcome of the morphs?
