Is that a thing that can be fixed, or just a limitation of the forum software? I think it's been happening for a year or two now.

Very few forums gray out the "save" button when it's clicked. However, some forums have double-post detection and prevention, i.e. when a post with the same contents is submitted multiple times in X number of seconds, it discards the repost. That would be a nice feature to have.
People do just need to be more patient though.

I agree, it gets really annoying, and it only validates the impatience of some users on this site with their triple and quadriple posts. The best approach would be when a user clicks 'Save', the button is greyed-out and is unclickable until the message is confirmed complete and posted.
