Not just another chat thread.

So here's my question, and forgive me if it's already been thought of, but what would it take for this site to have it's own chat room? I have no idea if it's technologically possible, or even desirable, but I was just wondering.

Technologically possible? Maybe. I've been working on the site upgrade, and I have a chat module in place and functioning. Whether it would continue to function under load, given the site's limited bandwidth, is something I'll have to find out the hard way.

Desirable? There seems to be a lot of demand for real-time communications capability. Whether it can be properly managed is another one of those "We'll have to see" kind of issues.

My question is, what are people are looking for in a chat room?

I think I'm in the minority as not feeling a chat room is a big draw but that's totally based on my personal habits. I like that the main conversation here does not take place in real time because I can still be a part of it as it unfolds. I don't dislike chatting in real time, but I usually don't have the time to hang out in a chat room, but I can schedule in late-night visits every day or two to check out messages.

But if we get one? I'd love if it could be tied in with our main login and not have to have a seperate login procedure. Some sites I've seen have the chat room on a different login database and that's always a drag.

It'd be great to embed file links in the chat too, so we could post images as part of the conversations.

Yeah, while a chat room might be great for some, personally I don't think I'd use it... I've visited chat rooms in the past and found that due to timezones, no-one's ever on at the same time as me.

I'd like one. However I've noticed a large percentage of people here who I have added via yahoo randomly decide to block or appear offline after a few days of talking. I'm a very likeable fellow in real life, and in other inflation chat rooms I have noticed a similar trend of people developing certain people they like and ignoring everyone else. I myself was bashed here on this site for just being an American a few years back. :/ So yea, it would be nice but you'd prob want separate rooms so people who know what/who they want to talk with can be with others. I personally like male and female inflation, so if another male only wants to talk to a female and no one else, maybe there could be a room so each could have their way. If that makes sense.

I'm a guy. Stop messaging me thinking I'm a girl. If I was, I doubt I would even talk to you anyway.

Agreed about the seperate rooms, I don't want to talk about real inflation, so I could ignore the "real inflation room" or something.

Never been bashed for being a Yank, but did have problems with UK chatters for logistical reasons(i.e., several hours difference between them and us, esp. as I work 2nd shift)...nice fellows otherwise.

Chat room would be nice, but I don't think that seperate rooms are needed cause there won't be many users to fill them with, I think... And of course the chat needs to be for registred users only to prevent a lot of spam. And as for the Luther's question: I will be looking for someone to chat with like instatly :P

A chatroom would be interesting, sadly after the piss poor experiences I have had on DeviantArt's expansion chat room (EXC) I would proceed with caution personally. The problem I have personally encountered was that people, especially artists, get into clicks which make it nigh impossible to have anything close to a meaningful conversation. Then again I have encountered the same problems on instant messenger services as well, which never made sense to me when you consider that they put their IM names out for people to contact them. Yet, I would still be willing to see what a chatroom here would be like.

That's exactly what I have experienced. I didn't know if it was just me or if there was some big conspiracy where people post their yahoo names on here then 90% of them reject my invites. I would still go for a chatroom, although I have continuously put my name on here and seen others do it but if people aren't willing to talk to you via yahoo, a chat room might not fare much better. Still, there are plenty of chat rooms you can just plug into your website and if there is concern not enough people will be on bandwidth issues are a non-issue, so it might not hurt to at least try it.

I have never chatted, but i imagine i'd behave in that way if i did, which is why i don't. For me, the reason would be that this computer is shared and i'd rather other people here didn't know what i was doing. That would apply to a lot of computers in houses with more than one person living in it and also in public places. I don't know how common that situation is, bu that may be what's going on.

Well that is a combination of people not understanding what can and can't be accessed from a computer. Without logging enabled you are safe on instant messengers. Besides, if you were in that position you wouldn't be on this site right now, let alone giving out your IM names :P

I have family visiting sometimes so I have to disappear for a while(like for Easter) since it's hard to get away from them for long enough when they are around to chat. I think a chat would be really cool on the site though.

just reviving this topic:

an 'official' IRC channel for the website could work. we have more than enough interested members to get it going, and channels have a way of attracting people themselves. plus setting it up wouldn't be to difficult; most servers have a registration of some kind and then the channel is active. we could put a java-based chat window on the site for the people who don't know how to work IRC clients, and see where it goes from there...

just a thought... ^^

You and me both. It seemed that people there were willing to talk abouit anything BUT expansion-related material.
