One thing I noticed that is pretty consistent in the inflation genre is that the inflation is relatively rapid. Occurring over seconds, minutes, occasionally hours. But you never see any stories involving inflation that takes over days, weeks, or months.
For some reason, I like the idea of a person expanding at like 1/4" per day. I think it's partly because part of the enjoyment for me is trying to do everyday things while expanded. The rapid expansion never seems to get into that.
Ooh, I can see the appeal of that... one common fantasy I have is living with a boyfriend or caretaker, who inflates me a little more day by day, and me trying to continue with normal life, with him helping me out when I can't quite manage something. ^_^ So I know where you're coming from, but for me if it was that slow it'd lose some of the fun, because it'd be so gradual I might not notice the full extent of what was happening.
I agree, slow expansion is rare at best. A well written story on that subject would be a good read. I have a story idea with a slow inflation theme. But I haven't done anything with it.
I've also considered slow expansion. There's a character who inflates her belly very slowly somewhere, whose name i forgot. The thing about slow expansion for me is that the person could get really huge because their body would have time to adapt.
We've been discussing the allegory of popping to orgasm in another thread; I'd offer that the faster inflation scenes are more akin to a sexual rush.
I do agree that slow progressions are underutilized, and I would really like to read some, but I think it's harder to make the distinction between inflation as slow as you suggest and weight gain.
Maybe that's the story right there.

Hmm...one problem is how do you have slow expansion, you risk slowing down the story to a extreme level. People may get bored with the story.
I'm not saying it can't be done, but it'd be tricky to write it well...

Personally I want to stretch out the expansion (no pun) for as long as I can. Often stories are just about some hot gal blowing up for no reason, which is (in my opinion) a bit like necking a glass of scotch. I'd rather savor the taste than knock it back in one, if you know what I mean. I also like a proper motive and plenty of time for the dread to sink in about what is happening. But I guess I'm just a wicked person :twisted:
A while back I started another story about a superheroine who became addicted to a mysterious potion that initially gave her increased strength, but then just made her gradually swell up. Quite a slow expansion, with plenty of opportunity for awkward inflated moments.
I am quite interested in the slow inflation idea... It could create more tension, and allow the inflatee more time to consider her situation... even allow her to try and do something about it. The more gradual pace would really draw out the sense of impending doom (if an explosion was threatened) It would also allow the writer to place the inflatee in a greater range of situations throughout the inflation.
It would be a great challenge to write this well though. Especially if the inflation was steady and constant, rather than occuring in fits and bursts. In this case the writer would have to refer to the inflatee's expanding body little and often... descriptions of the expansion itself (as opposed to of the inflated form of the inflatee) would be limited, and common descriptions such as buttons bursting, creaks, visible surging outwards of flesh, tightening of clothing would have to be handled much more carefully and delicately.
The pace of the story would also have to be slowed down... it is important that the story reads as though it is taking place over days or weeks. The writer will have to include additional events which suggest the passage of time and overall the story would be longer.
I agree Carnatic, It'd be very difficult to make a inflation story with slow inflation that SEEMS slow, and not something along the lines of, "A week later, she was outgrowing her pants"
You'd practically have to write a full on story, and have the inflation almost background. I'm not saying it's impossible, but man...it'd be hard. I dunno if i could do it. I wrote one story with (almost) no inflation, more of a aftereffects of being huge, but a story where a girl would take a year to blow up to violet size would be really hard...
Slow Inflation...*thinks about it* it is reasonable if ye know how to place a trigger on a boring scene. During my time outside of this site, I was thinking up some weird ideas that would get people to think of me as a twisted-minded guy with glasses. With some sexual provocations and written subliminal suggestions, maybe the classical cliffhangers, it is possible to fictionalize a diary about a twenty-three year old woman going under multiple stages of long period expansion caused by "her current position in a job" and have mixed emotions about it. Later on, she began to realized that her expanded body (or body parts) had gotten to an outrageous size that would caused her problems. I also thought up a few ways that slow inflation would possibly be enjoyable.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just remembered a story idea I had a long time ago, which fits in well with this concept.
A young, arrogant day trader (call him Kevin) visits an old Chinese acupuncturist for help quitting smoking. While waiting for his appointment, he ogles the young, pregnant receptionist, much to her discomfort. Little does he realize that she is actually the acupuncturist's granddaughter, and the acupuncturist is furious when she tells him what happened. So in addition to curing Kevin's smoking addiction, the acupuncturist secretly alters the flow of energy in his body such that every time he is aroused by the sight of a pregnant woman, his belly inflates.
The inflation is very slow, and Kevin doesn't notice it at first, but it's also completely irreversible. When his bulge becomes too large to conceal anymore, he tries to force it down -- but only succeeds in diverting air to his butt, thighs and pectorals, which then begin to inflate along with his belly whenever he sees, or even thinks of, an attractive pregnant woman.
Eventually, Kevin is forced to pretend to be a pregnant woman himself (he is young and androgynous enough to pull this off), at which point he inflates just by looking at his own body. When the inflation reaches the point where he has trouble walking, the old acupuncturist shows up at his door, explains what he did, and offers to restore Kevin's natural energy flow with another acupuncture session. Of course, sticking needles in Kevin's body would be a bad idea right then; if Kevin wants to deflate himself, that will be considerably more difficult...
Right now I have so many half-written stories that adding another to the heap would probably paralyze me altogether. So if anyone else wants to develop this idea, feel free!

I was thinking more for female inflation. But it could definitely work with a guy. I do like the belly being the main part of inflation on him. And there seems to be a lack of good male hetero inflation.
I might use something like that. i try to expand my inflation periods between weeks in stories, so i'll have to try maybe a year of slow inflation then a reason for sudden inflation and possible popping

That's a great concept! I also like the challenge of trying to move and act while inflated; it's the central theme of one of my stories.
There's a lot of story potential in a case of gradual but inexorable inflation. Maybe a woman has an incurable medical condition that will cause her to inflate into an immobile sphere, and she has to enjoy her mobility while she has it while coming to terms with what's happening to her.
