Game in production: Scuba Marianna

Maybe this would be more appropiate in the Artist Studio section. But only registered users have access to it, and I want as many views as I can get.

Alright! I'm making another game. A beat 'em up. Kind of a Ninja Turtles game.

This is what I have so far:

The one in blue is the protagonist.

STORY: What I have in mind for the story, roughly, is that some kind of Queen(the villain of the game), at her 50's, is worrying about starting to age, but learns about a diamond inside a volcano in an island that will guarantee her youth and health.
So she gets this precious stone and the eternal beauty, but it causes an imbalance to the weather of the Planet. The oxygen of the atmosphere becomes toxic. But she doesn't care.
Now people has to carry an oxygen backpack with them in order to be able to breathe.
So here comes our heroine(Marianna), who has to defeat this evil Queen and get the diamond back to the volcano, to restore the balance of Nature. But the villain has a lot of trained women minions who will try to stop her.

GAMEPLAY: You fight the oponnents with punches, kicks, karate moves as in many beat'em up games. But in the final stroke, you get the valve of their oxygen tank, and open it to the max, causing them to inflate. You must get away before they explode(clean, not gory). The explosion may defeat other minions that are close by.
The opponents would attack you with different kind of weapons, like whips, spears, anvils, etc. And my idea is that you can pick some of these weapons when you defeat them(still the final stroke would always be to change the pressure of their oxygen tanks).
The bosses would be female shaped monsters. Something I have in mind is a giant snake with a woman face and breasts. They would use oxygen tanks as well, so they would also get inflated when you defeat them too.

So I think this time I will show the game as I make it, so I feel motivated by the comments.

Awesome idea. If you care for suggestions, I have some.

-Instead of a "Queen", couldn't she be like the head of some corrupt, multinational corporation or weapons manufacturer? Will help with the whole theme of dooming the world out of their own greed, would explain she having an army...and just seeing fascist like soldiers in breath masks looks cool :)

- I know next to nothing about making this or any kind of game, but something that would really make it great is variety. For example, variety in enemy types, inflation poses and sprites, so it doesnt feel like you are seeing the same person inflate the same way over and over. Sound would also be a factor here, but in this kind of game I guess you cant be very diverse with sound.

Why did you choose a corporation darth_clone? Why not a corrupt, communist government, built on conspiracies and social takeover? That seems like a much greater threat to the world than business, especially when if they would tear down forests and parks to build public works.

I do have something: Maybe Marianna could have the ability to inflate herself, even if it's just for a brief time, to perform new attacks against her enemies. As in, she could roll or belly flop them.

But I probably thought "Queen" remembering the Dark Queen from Battletoads. I like the idea of the villain wearing a dress in a Jessica Rabbit fashion.

Sergy92: Self inflation is fine sometimes. But I think on this occasion I prefer it to happen agains the characters's will.
Marianna will get inflated though, by the enemies, when defeated. The same way she does to them.

How about the need to end villain defeated 2 times .... a human form with inflating the suit and the other the effect of his corruption and the power of a dragon renasca diamond or other cristura to which have to defeat in a final and final to win the game

With the help of the diamond, the main villain might take different forms to stand out from the other bosses as a final fight. Haven't decided it though.

What I will likely show next:
An animation with another foe, a rather tall latex woman with a whip. Her breasts(quite big) will be at the height of our heroine's shoulders. So when punching her, her breasts will bounce like a speed bag. At the final hit, Marianna will "steal" the whip, and tie the opponent up(a pretty quick action), and then increase the pressure of her oxygen tank. The inflation will probably focus more on the breasts this time around.

Hm, wasn't there already an orange-clad enemy in a previous post? She had different hair and a mace rather than a whip.

Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news. Bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men.

Oh wow this is incredible stuff mate! I love how forceful and different the inflations seem to be! If each enemy has a different inflation like those examples, this'll be amazing! =D

Are you considering giving each enemy type at least two inflations that happen randomly, so as to not see the same sprite over and over? Again, I suck at technology so I dont even know if thats possible.

Colors will repeat. The enemies will have warm colors to contrast with the protagonist's blue. So you'll see red, orange, orangish yellow, purplish red, black and white with some warm tendency, and probably many of these will repeat on different foes.

That sure is possible. I have considered it, but will depend on amount of characters I end up making. Maybe will happen on the enemies that appear more often (the weaponless, easiests to beat ones)

What can you do in the game so far:
There is only one foe, and is harmless by now.
You get close to her, and punch a number of times, until she changes her pose to a more dizzy one.
Then, you walk even closer to her, and punch again. So the valve sequence comes. The enemy inflates, but stops at the end of the expansion, without exploding.
And that's all. You can restart with the R key.

Some notes:
- I cut some frames of the valve sequence with the intention of making the gameplay more agile. But I think the action isn't very clear now, so I think I will put back the missing frames.
- I'm thinking in not having the enemy explode, but bounce inflated around the place. Sometimes they might be useful for the protagonist. By instance, Mariana could jump over them to bounce higher to reach some item. Maybe they could also be popped with a harpoon, if you have picked that weapon somewhere.

Interesting. That kind of gave me an idea - are you familiar with the gameplay of Viewtiful Joe? In slow-motion mode you could punch dizzy enemies and send them flying into other enemies for heavy damage.

In this game, maybe you could punch inflated enemies to make them fly into other normal enemies, causing dizziness or stunning?

I can tell that this is gonna probably be the best inflation game ever done! 

As Smiler said, I also prefer the popping. As a beat em up game, you definitely want to keep it interesting and not a button mashing fest, so the idea of having inflated enemies serve some purpose falls into that design...however, my fetish side sort of wants my gamer side to shut up and just have them explode lol Maybe the harpoon is a good compromise between the two...or maybe the rate of inflation can be controlled like in Dig Dug, instead of just being an animation: press the button to twist the valve, and if you twist it to the end she definitely explodes. Maybe the decision to explode them versus have them inflated can also serve a purpose: maybe some switches and obstacles require an explosion to be dealt with, or maybe an exploding enemy stuns surrounding ones temporarily. Just brianstorming, its your game and you decide whats best :p

I'll think about the popping. It is actually easier for me to just let them explode.
Variation (in the gameplay) may come from the enemies' moves and attacks.

There's certainly no reason why it can't evolve a you go along and have new improved releases. I like the popping as well, but even better would be some juicy humiliation variations.

I take it that the enemies are going to be able to fight back, and the Marianna isn't immune to suffering the same fate herself?

I agree regarding evolving with new versions.

Effectively. The enemies will attack the protagonist, and when her life bar gets empty, the baddies will take Marianna's pressure valve.

Love the ideas of the enemy charachters inflating differently. Can we get an enemy where the inflation is focused on the butt, kinda like the orange characters boobs did. That would be sweet.

And what of items you can pick up. Like a pump, dig dug style. So when you use it the enemy, they turn around in the stun animation, mariana inserts the pipe to the enemies bum and you can inflate with a button press.

Very cool project by the way. Its shaping up really nicely.

Thanks for the encouraging words. There will likely be butt or "pear shaped" inflation. Head as mentioned by SugarHigh as well.

It's not my style to insert something into the butt.

I love Dig Dug, but I think in this game the only way to inflate will be the pressure valve.
In case I end up adding items, They will very likely not be inflation related. They will help you to get the enemies stunned faster, or have a wider range of attack. However they might influence in the later inflation visuals.
By instance, you pick up a big hammer, flatten enemies with it, then turn the valve, and you see a new animation of the character inflating from the flattening.

The process became too slow, so I paused the production of the game.

Now, I have this idea to resume the project: ask for help.

I'm thinking in having some people helping me after they get paid, and some people helping me voluntarily.
But I don't think I have enough money to pay peolple. So how do I think to pay?
Well, my idea is that people interested in working in my project contact me and show me some samples of their work, and if I accept them, the person in question opens an Indie Gogo crowdfunding for their desired payment for a week or month of work. Then I post links in my Deviantart journal(or a particular thread in this forum) to these people's crowdfunding. Once they reach their goal, they help me in the project during a week/month/whatever.

People who is able or willing to help me for free, can do so if I like their samples too.

I would be the director, though I can do a little of every other task as well.

People that would come in handy:

-Pixel animators.
I would give them the first and last poses of an action, among some other parameters. Animation can be rough as the one I showed earlier in this thread. I can animate too.

-Pixel animation inbetweeners.
They add needed images between the key poses of the animations to make them look more fluent. These can be rough too. I can do this.

-Pixel animation cleaners.
Refine the animations and inbetweens. They add missing detail and correct deformed shapes. By instance, the beforementioned animation needs to be cleaned. I can do this.

-People that can translate images drawn in paper into pixels. I can do this.

-Background pixel artists.
I have less experience, but can do some.

-Musicians.
Music will likely be made in midi format, or with some 8bit tune maker. I made the only melody for Inflated Scuba Ladies, but you can see how basic is my music knowledge. I can hum the music for the musician.

-People with good control with the making of 8 bit sounds.
I use a program called sfxr to make sounds. But I can be sometimes a long time experimenting with the parameters to find something similar to what I want. Someone with more experience may come handy. I can show the kind of sound I want and timing with my voice.

-Programmers.
This task can be pretty time consuming for me. I'm not really a programmer. I only know how to use Game Maker. But I'd accept a programmer that uses whatever language or program he feels comfortable with. I would send him little tests made with game maker to show him how I want the organization of things, like timing, reaction to buttons, speed of animations, etc.

The end result would be posted at some page to be played for free. But I'd keep the copyright over most characters and game. I think it is important to mention this, because some people may dislike the idea of helping me if I plan to make money of possible sequels or merchandise.

Feel free to ask me any doubts.

Pandoramail has a producing team that might be able to help in a few months after their commissions and their own game. Sergy62 and 7Perry7 do pixel art and so may be able to help. You should ask them.

I have experience with synthing sounds and making music in Ableton, but I've never tried to make music in a MIDI format. I might be able to find some resources though.

I have some design know how, and different kinds of software knowledge, a bit of illustration know how. but never done pixel art or animation ouside of flash. Will pm you in the week when I have gathered my resources together.
