I've told a couple of friends in the past but now it's exclusively for my SO.
Beyond the fetish she's also aware of my work I've done in the past.
But yeah it's a sexual fetish so it's best to just keep it with sexual partners. I've learned that ours is severely tame and your sexual partners though amused will be relieved you're not hoping they kick you in the balls, piss on you or something else.
And the ones who think it's too weird to the point of shunning you for it are probably sexual pruds who suck in bed and are bad at social aceptance anyway so good fuck them. Proverbially.
So yes keeping it to yourself is okay but after awhile you're going to need some release. This fetish is way too widespread to let it stay in the shadows. We are in that perfect medium where we are not so obscure that we can't get material yet not too widespread that we get made fun of on a constant basis by the general public like furries.
Edit: And for the love of god don't tell your family. Why? Just no please.

For the most part, I agree with you Margeret. The only person I'd ever tell any of my fetishes or kinks to would be that other person I intend to share my bed with. And only then, after a long time of getting familiar and comfortable with each other.

I think I've told six people: My husband at the time (he got me into this stoopid fetish, so that was sort of a given). I've told two of my oldest friends (not sleeping with either of them), and I think three guys I've dated. For the most part, it's gone well. The ones that didn't, eh, fuck 'em.
That being said, I do keep it a secret from virtually everyone until I have a damn good reason or need to share it. Being an inflatible superheroine...if that doesnt scream "secret identity" I dont know what does.

I've told someone in person only once and that didn't go well, though I believe there were other underlying trust reasons afoot. Since then I've kept things to myself. I'm pretty sure I've drawn a few suspicions but nothing ever came of them. I would share this again, but only with a significant other I would trust completely.

The only friends of mine who know about my kink are the ones I made right here in the community (some of whom I'm pretty tight with).
As far as my friends and family in meatspace are concerned, none of them know about my kink, and I intend to keep it that way if at all possible. None of them really have the maturity or open-mindedness when it comes to sexual stuff that you need to take information like that in stride. At best, they'd be creeped out; at worst, they'd never speak to me again, or demand that I seek counselling to 'cure' me of my 'unhealthy fantasies'.
Even if that weren't the case, I've always believed that there are some things about you that your friends and family don't need to know - especially when it comes to your sex life or what kind of porn you look at. Telling your spouse or significant other is one thing, since you have a shared sex-life. Telling your family and friends is another matter entirely. If they find out by accident, you can explain it to them then (it never hurts to have a simple, concise explanation handy), but otherwise it isn't something they "Need to Know".
