Inflation, bursting - just fun or, romance and drama

 I know some people hate when the inflatee goes boom. Quite easy to understand.

 There are various workarounds.

 First,  there is a silly ploy: inflatee somehow restores after the explosion. 

 Second, inflatee is just a balloon don't think about it as death. He or she inflates to deliver enormous amounts of fun and a torrent of rubbery scraps. Or this is a very special world where inflation and bursting is socially acceptable way of entertainment. Crazy carnival setting. 

Third,  way is drama. Of course its dark, but it also spices feelings, when the main character dies.

 And fourth, make everything not real. Virtual reality or dream. You can die in a game and respawn. This somewhat intersects with first and second options.
