I may have missed it...my life hasn't quite reached dumpster fire level but there has been a lot IRL...anyway, I realized last night that the 1971 WWatCF would have been been released like 50 years ago. Looked it up and sure enough, it was on June 30, 1971 making it the 50th anniversary.
As iconic a film as I think it is and remains, I was surprised in general that there were no mentions or blurbs anywhere in mainstream media. If you do a search for 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', nothing pops up...you have to specifically add the tag 'turns 50' to find a few random articles online, which is a little disappointing because you have to be aware of the date and know what you are looking for, rather than stumble across the discovery by accident and have a moment of nostalgia.
I realize by Hollywood standards the film wasn't a record-breaker; Dahl hated it and the box office results were subpar, but there's no denying the cult status it has since attained. Maybe it's me, maybe it's just a bunch of other stuff in life that makes this all the more annoying...normal media can remember every other movie or actor on key dates, why not this one?
Is there a reason why Ronald Dahl didn't like it?
