How dangerous is sucking helium?

Hey guuuuuys.

I gotta helium balloon and I've been tempted to try and inflate myself with it. I don't want to just simply suck it out, I wanna try and swallow it rather than fill my lungs with it. Any advice on how to do this more easier would be appreciated.

I'm just wondering what damage this might cause.

Short answer is, don't do it.

I'm not a health expert but I can say that from working in the oil industry, inhaling pure helium (or any other gas) can't be good. In our industry any time the breathable atmosphere is less than 19.5% oxygen or greater than 24.5%, that's considered a toxic environment and you'll need to evacuate it immediatly. Therefore sucking in a gas that pushes oxygen out of this range can't be good for you.

What if I attempt to swallow it instead of inhaling it? I know some will get into my lungs but would the majority not go to my stomach?

Still a bad idea. It is very light, and passes through solid matter much more readily than other gasses do.

There is also a fairly serious helium shortage, making the gas increasingly expensive.

Besides possibly kill you, what is helium going to accomplish that regular air won't?  You're not going to get nearly enough helium in you to make you float.

It'll make you sound silly, And that's about the end of the positives right there.

I actually have two videos from reiinapop that have her inflating with helium. One by sucking it out of balloons and the tank itself, and the other is her inflating the "natural" way and those videos are pretty long. I don't know if that means anything about it being dangerous but she still uploads soooo... :T

Well, it's been fun

Out of a balloon, not at all dangerous, it's fine and in all honesty other than the fantasy it really isn't any different from air. Don't forget to breath, it isn't a replacement for air.

The only risk helium would pose is if you inhaled it and then didn't soon replace it wit oxygen. In regards to swallowing it, I really don't see any risk considering helium is a noble gas and as such unreactive. By the same token I don't necessarily see how it would be much different from normal air

I say go for it and share any results

Outdoors - bad bad idea, indoors - fun but too fast

Fortunately, helium density is much lower than air density at sea level, so most pumps and heliumtanks will inflate you much faster than if they would be pumping air.

Unfortunately, air has density of helium at altitudes well above 30 thousand feet so helium's lift will erect you to sure bursting in scorching sunlight and space cold of stratosphere.

(NEVER try it in real life)

Just after sucking out all the helium and now my belly is pretty swollen, plus I feel like I've lost 10 pounds!

It feels kinda funny though and my belly's not going down. I still have the typical effects of helium though but I've took in so much that I can taste it in throat, and can even smell it in my nostrils when I breathe out! I still seem to have a little extra whistle at the end of every word though and in my breathing. Other than that, I feel fine, it was pretty tasty. I did seem a little off balance though after I stood up but I think that all narrowed down to the light weight of my belly. I thought I had done something stupid right after though, I drank a bunch of soda. That made my belly blow up a little bit more and had a strange sensation in my stomach for a few minutes. There's still a faint feeling but it's not as intense. It's still making some pretty weird noises too, was doing it a little bit too when I first swallowed the helium. Another thing is that I feel oddly awake even though I was so tired before.

I now feel a little bit gassy but my belly still hasn't went down.
