Hot Air Helia

One magnificently warm sunny day, with the sky a beautiful hue of blue and devoid of clouds, a group of balloonists gathered in the local park. Interested in watching the colorful big hot air and helium balloons rise into the clear afternoon sky, two female friends and I walked to the park. We took some blankets to lay out on while we watched the event. It was such a wonderful warm day that we wore our swim suits and shorts figuring all three of us could catch some sun.

"Hey Kristin!" giggled Kelly gleefully, as she saw her long-time colleague enter the Gap store.

"Hi Kelly," replied Kristin, walking casually over to the checkout. Her shift wasn't due to start for another ten minutes and she wanted to catch up on the latest info.

"So, what's been going on?" she continued.

"Oh, the usual," said Kelly with a mischievous smile. "Nothing exciting. Oh, but there is something I want to show you!"

No Competition

A man sat in a booth at the dark end of the bar, a clutch of balloons drifting back and forth above his head as air currents from the heating toyed with the pretty rubber globes. His posture and alert response every time the door opened denoted he was waiting for someone with great eagerness. The perfect victim.

Conspiracy, part 2: Hard Lessons

The Hubbell Research Group had been a frantic hive of activity for several weeks.  Five years was a long time to be idle, and the staff was straining to handle the volume of leads that Barney was producing.  But even with so much work to be done, nobody commented when Jack came in on Friday morning with his usual stack of tabloids.

"Hey Barney."

"Hey Jack."

"The Dog Boy got engaged to the Turtle Girl," he said, flipping through The Snoop.

"I'm certain that will be a fascinating wedding registry.  Anything in the headlines jump out at you?"

Amanda the Balloon Girl

It was my first day at Gremlin's toy shop. I had always wanted to work with children, so this was a big thing, and even though I was going to have to start at the bottom doing menial and probably humiliating tasks I was really looking forward to it.

I was now sitting in an ancient-looking, clean but dimly-lit wood-panelled room with an antique looking oak desk behind which sat an antique looking oak gentleman in a tweed suit. This contrasted with the public part of the shop, which was trendy and modern, all chrome and glass with the latest gadgets for children everywhere.

Minimum Wage, part 1: Carnival Clown

Gavin knew he shouldn't complain. With the economy in its current state, he was lucky to be able to find a summer job, and it wasn't unusual for parents to require their kids to work as a condition of car and party privileges. He just wished he could have found something in the IT field, as opposed to making balloon animals for snot-nosed kids. The pay was lousy, the costume and makeup were hot and heavy, the locker room smelled terrible, and every popped balloon meant a crying child and an irate parent yelling in his face.
