I nervously held my hat by the brim, sliding it along my hands as they grew sweaty. I was up next for the company talent show, and I wasn't feeling confident at all. My best friend said I was going to do just fine if I took a breath and relaxed, but I couldn't see how I could do that. The balloon juggler before me finished his act to the booing from the crowd. He stormed off the stage, mumbling something about people not respecting the art.

Jessica discreetly peered over the top of her office cubicle as she absentmindedly marked off the 30+ new emails in her inbox as ‘read’, knowing that most of them were automated invitations to office events that she would never even consider going to. ‘1000 Days Without An Accident Celebration’? Give me a break. The office where she worked, with its flimsy cardboard sheets that somehow passed for walls, was about the least dangerous environment she could think of.

This story takes place at the birthday party of a girl named Danielle, and concerns three different groups of her friends, including Danielle herself. It would take far too long to tell you about all three of these groups and what is about to happen between them in one sitting, so we’re going to have to split this story into three parts. This first part concerns the first group.

It was 10:05 p.m. and I, Lento, was a manager at a supermarket called Archerd's. It was closing time on a Friday night because of my birthday. I always do this for others birthdays as well while other stores are all nighters. My plan for my birthday will be Chinese, Italian and French pastry eating. You're probably thinking I'm a pig right. Well no, it's always been a tradition to eat a lot on a birthday. Us Italians love food.

The anesthetic made the color slowly drain from the world. Karen felt a soft weight over her whole body, and then everything went black. It was a deep sleep that seemed to go on for hours.

When she awoke Karen felt strangely lighter than she used to and there was a strange tickling near her shoulder blades. Stranger still she felt something where should have felt nothing. She tried to turn to look behind her only to find that she was tightly restrained. She opened her mouth to scream but no words came out.

"Hey Selina, want some?" Lily giggled. Selina was a dork at high school, and everyone always mocked her for it. Her long, tangled black hair reached her waist and she had dark freckles all over her skin. She always wore tight clothing, trying to make herself look sexy, but it never worked. She was just a dork, and although she was actually pretty, nobody really cared. She was always a dork, and that's how it would always be.
