The sun had set outside of the corner café, and I knew I was fucked.

With the rate Austen was reading through his poems, there wouldn’t be any daylight to walk home. To the dozen or so other young adults in here with us, he read with no rush whatsoever. This particular poem was an extended metaphor about how the smoke of apartment fires choked the city like the host of other community issues. My friend was quite the subtle activist. I had to commend him for making his writing amount to more public visibility than my work ever could.

High in the sky, spying down upon the world with an eye for justice, Ms. Bouncer floated along underneath inflated breasts. Listening to the sounds of wind and creaking skin, she sighed and turned her sight to her own cleavage. “Quiet day today,” she mused to herself. “Nothing’s happened since that bank robbery this morning. I should probably get down soon.” Looking back down at the city below, Amelia’s gaze drifted over to the suburbs where something caught her attention. A sign was visible on the roof of a small house, facing straight up to the sky.

I froze midway into the first bite of my BLT, startled by the shout and the hand that slapped the counter next to me. A cold dread pushed down as I finished the bite, raised my head, and looked to my side. I lowered my sandwich back down to the plate as a hush fell over the lunchtime crowd.
